Good reading

Six years ago, my mother, suffering from Alzheimer's, stopped eating. I knew she would die soon, and went looking for something to help me through the transition. I can't remember how I came upon this book, but it was perfect for me. It's short (@50 pages), eloquent, and compassionate. It made me confident that I too could compassionatley and with clarity, be with my mom as she died, and that she would have a good death. With the help of this book and our local hospice, she did indeed have a good death about three weeks later. I have no regrets, just comforting memories. I have given this book to about a dozen friends and acquaintances. I just ordered five more copies, one of someone now, and more for later. I highly recommend this book.

This easy to read, easy to understand, quick read on death and dying shows the dying process in an entirely different light than what I had previously envisioned in the physical aspect. As I read the book, I found that I reached a more comfortable feeling about death, both from the perspective of being the one dying and the potential caregiver. I feel so strongly about this book that I am going to buy copies for each of my family members and use it as as tool for friends who are facing decisions about dying either for themselves or loved ones.

I am a neurologist and I recommend this book all the time. The author was a great guy, who had a wonderful way with people and a wonderful view of life. I have found his explanations of the questions that are faced at the end of life so useful and hopeful and practical.

One boy did not play the game so he acted like he did then the popularity of the boys playing it as much went down so the people that did not fit in got obsessed with the game he bought one of these books and drew them then handed em out to the kids that played the game and asked money for them he asked $ 4 I got one forgot the money 1 day at school then the teacher stopped him so then I did not get to pay anything.

One of the things I look for in nursing text books is whether or not they are a good reference text for nursing practice. The essential problem that comes up with nursing text books is that some of them can't actually be used in practice. When this is the case there is very little point to even purchasing a nursing text book or utilizing it, as instructors will expect you to utilize the text book for reference. Some of the problems that make this book a poor reference tool are very poor evidence based writing with a significant amount of outdated knowledge and poor use of medical terminology. The text reads more like a parenting book mixed with "What to Expect When you're Expecting". Not much extra information other than the small boxes that it has. Suffers from the "explain it in one sentence" problem with key information not receiving much explanation or pathology. Too much use of "flowery" language and terminology that is inappropriate for a nursing textbook. Talks down to the reader in ways that make it difficult to really understand the information without having to utilize another source. One has to parse through the text in sections to actually find the information it is trying to convey. Reference manuals should not have extraneous language that doesn't benefit the understanding of the actual materials. The text is written in terms of medical hand outs, not for professional use. I do appreciate that the text has accompaniments online, but the reading level for the text is so low that it detracts from the reader's ability to parse knowledge from the paragraphs.

Excelsior just updated their textbooks and started using this one in place of the Maternity/Peds book they had before. I was SO happy about this. This book is way better, and I haven't found any grammar or spelling errors yet. (The last book was so full of them that I refused to read it until they updated.) It also has better visual aids inside, and it can be used with The Point, which is one of my favorite things about it.

The book keeps repeating the same information over and over and... You get my point. Some of it is contradictory for example in chapter 12 it lists Colace as a pregnancy Class C drug but in Chapter 13 it says Colace is safe to take with no teratogenic effects throught pregnancy. I thought maybe it was me so I actually looked up both pages and read one with the other and it absolutely cotridicts itself. I believe the authors wrote more words to make themselves appear more scholarly. If they would have put down their pens for a minute the book would be half as thick. If you don't absolutely need it for class, don't buy it!!!!!!

Has several QSEN questions throughout the text that correlate with the chapter! Thorough key points listed at the end of the chapter! I rented the book so the code to log in for NCLEX review questions was already previously used 😭 but other than that great book!!

About the Author

Dr Jiben Roy is Associate Professor, Department of Sciences and Mathematics, Mississippi University for Women. He has a long and unique experience and has established an impressive track record in teaching, research and working in the pharmaceutical industry. In addition, his academic qualifications and work experiences have been enriched with international experience. Dr Roy had his undergraduate education from Bangladesh, PhD from Canada, and a post-doctoral fellowship in the USA; teaching experiences from Bangladesh, Australia and USA; pharmaceutical work experience in both bulk drugs and formulations from Bangladesh. He was the project director and principal scientist of Bangladesh first antibiotic raw material manufacturing unit, Gonoshasthaya Antibiotics Ltd and later on he joined Square Pharmaceutical Ltd. As head of R & D and technical services. He worked with many international consultants and visited many pharmaceutical companies in India, China, Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland. Dr Roy has over four dozen publications, and has co-edited a special issue of journal, current medicinal chemistry.
