This is a thoroughly generous and well-balanced introduction to the writings and thought of Rene Girard. His mimetic theory has immense explanatory power radically reaching into and connecting seemingly disparate disciplines and thought-worlds. His more anthropological approach to the Judeo-Christian narrative, climaxing in the Gospel of Jesus, provides an incredible perspective that surely makes for a healthy corrective both to dangerously abstract and dehistoricized theological interpretations of the atonement (that could at the very least subconsciously lead to the endorsement and use of brutal violence), and also to the popular “post-Christian” attempt to pit the concern for victims against the idea of an almost inherently oppressive Christianity (which is itself the intellectual and spiritual revolution that first gave voice to the scapegoated victim in the first place). Between this Reader and the 5 part CBC interview with Rene Girard (do listen to that as well on YouTube), I am captivated by the brilliance of this man, and have been drawn both Girard’s other books and also those works of his influences and conversation partners.

While Rene Girard is less well known in the United States, in Europe, and I speak particularly of France and Germany, he is considered one of the great thinkers of modern times, on a par--insofar as his influence and his innovative thought is concerned--with Freud and Marx, and he is a far more noteworthy thinker for us at this historical moment than either of those two men, whatever their reputation. Girard's work is as accessible as it is startling in its clarity, fundamental simplicity, and authenticity. Reading Girard draws us into one prolonged "Aha!" moment where we ask ourselves over and over how something so clear and so simple could have escaped our notice. René Girard is--or rather was--a practicing Christian, but he had the most tolerant, open-minded respect and interest in the values of others. Moreover, his theories are not contingent upon any acceptance of Christian dogma. He was a thinker of great stature and we should all mourn his passing.

This book is a great addition to my Girard library in French. I wanted to be able to share my keen interest for his inspiring work and ideas with all my American friends and family. This is the perfect entry point for readers who are prepared to make the effort: this is not casual reading. But the reward in a critical look on many tough issues of our personal and societal lives is well worth it.

For me this is a key reference book as I don't have the time or energy to read all the writings of this great philosopher. His theories on the development of culture, especially, religion, are remarkable. The Girard Reader clearly shows his memetic theory, how he developed it, and its importance. For Christians he shows the meaning and impact of Jesus.

Girard has deepest intellectual argument for the Transformative power of the Gospel. Silicon Valley's Peter Theil is a former student and supporter of Girard's thought

Reading Girard's theory on mimetic contagion and scapegoating and its application to the Old and New Testament is a revelation. Girard sees the revelation of God in the Old and New Testament as not just another myth but rather the process by which God unfolds what has been going on in Human Culture since time began. For Girard, all human cultures are founded on a scapegoat who has been ritually murdered. Myth tells the foundational murder from the perspective of the vitimisers. Girard discovered that, by contrast, the Judeo-Christian scriptures do the opposite: they side with the victim. The selections of writings in the Reader (extracts from various books and interviews) explain the evolution of his thought. Note that some of the earlier chapters on the evidence for triangular desire and mimesis in literature are hard going, particularly if you are not faimiliar with the authors being analysed. But, it is worth perservering. And, if the book grabs your attention, there is now a whole industry of Giradian writings to feast on.

Got my book today from the mail, and I find it okay...I liked the size of it, I can definitely put it in my bag. This book gives us a very brief idea on each crystal, what it's made of, healing properties, where to position it for better results. It just doesn't include affirmation which is included in other books like Margaret Ann Lembo's "The Essential Guide to Crystals, Minerals, and Stones."

The three-part Bible series is great. Keep in mind none of the stones are duplicated from one book to another, so buying #3 does NOT mean you get everything in 1 and 2. You "need" all three, which gives you upwards of 750-800 stone descriptions in total.

This review is for the kindle edition only. The kindle edition does not have pictures which makes it hard to identify stones.

I wish I had realized that there is one other review here for the Kindle version and it clearly states there are no pictures. If I had realized that I probably wouldn't have purchased this at all. It will be useful for looking up attributes of different stones/crystals but that's it. I'll have to go elsewhere for any help identifying stones.

I'm new into crystal/gemstone healing and protective powers. I'm energetically sensitive and very much an empath. I purchased two bracelets that have several different stones, to include Shungtite, Black Tourmaline, and Tiger's Eye. This book has helped me also learn about the loose stones that I've purchased at a local store that sells everything crystals and gemstones. When I went into the store for the second time in a week, I asked the woman who owns the place if she could point me in the direction of a stone that would help me harness compassion and unconditional love; lo-and-behold she flipped right to Prehnite. After reading the pages on it, I felt a strong sense of calm, as this was the EXACT stone I needed in my life-not only harnessing unconditional love for others, but harnessing powerful properties to heal the healer. I'm infinity grateful to this woman, and to The Crystal Bible, as I continue my journey into learning how to continue to heal myself, while also helping to heal others in this world that so desperately need it through crystals, gemstones, Reiki and other holistic approaches.

Great intro to crystals. It's also really nice that it is organized in alphabetical order.The only difficult thing is sometimes I can't remember the name of a crystal and would like to be able to look it up by color but the internet is good for that ;)

This is my first purchase of the three-part series by Judy Hall. Volume 1 covers over 200 crystals! I can already tell you I'll be purchasing volumes 2 and 3 (each of which cover 200+ MORE crystals/stones, not included in volume 1) I love how each crystal description includes photos to further help in identification. I also appreciate that rarity and sources were included. Information about the spiritual and physical impacts of crystals on the body is in there as well! This book is loaded with a lot of great information and is the perfect quick reference. It's also small and fits easily in my hand. I highly recommend it for beginners.

I just bought the ebook, and I'm not sure if this book has been revised, or not, but I am going to have to disagree with some of the other reviewers. THIS EBOOK HAS BEAUTIFUL, CLEAR PICTURES OF EACH CRYSTAL DESCRIBED. It contains quite a bit of useful information, and it is perfect for someone who is curious about the metaphysical properties of various crystals and wishes to be able to identify them.

I have worked with crystals for 25 years and it's been a long process to get better at using them. At first nothing would happen at all.This book goes into so much detail the stone, the colors, the shape, all sorts of stuff. I am so glad I bought it. I think she wrote another book but this one is really important. It goes through the physical & emotional & spiritual impacts of the crystal on the body as well as a ton of other information. If you are looking for a book truly this is it.

This book immediately became a favorite. My son was about 2.5 years old when he got this book, he's almost 4 now, and it is still a favorite. For months we had to read it 2x as his bedtime "story" as well as several times during the day. Until I hid it (i could only read it so many times!) He still loves to read it. He even started making up stories about some pics. For instance, the Keppler Spacecraft is going to bring us all to Poppy's house after we visit the moon. 😊I like the large size of the book and the sturdy pages.If it looks a little beat up in the pics, it's bc it gets so much use.

This book reads Dwaft Planets are round however Haumea is oval so now I question the other facts in this book.

the book arrived damaged with the corners smashed from poor packaging. Amazon is replacing it for free. The book itself is awesome. Bright , full of information for young ones and covers a variety of information relating to the universe. LOVE it.

If you want your child to have a career, then put down that you tube video and read this book. It's great for space and planet lovers (our child is obsessed).

Love the big size and the photos! Great quality and perfect for an astronomer in training. My almost 2 year old son loves planets, "ast-naut" (astronaut) and the "moont" (moon). Love that it's a board book that my toddler can't destroy.

This is a book for a much older child than my 9 month old hahaha. It's great because it's ABC universe and right up my husbands ally and it has great educational blurbs (which will come in handy in a few years) but really wont help my child learn the ABC's one bit.
