A Girl Named Zippy, by Haven Kimmel

Review

"Almost dreamlike in some of [her] elusive storytelling, [Kimmel] pulls off a feat that’s harder than it looks: write for adults from a child’s perspective . . . Zippy's parents must have done something right to produce a girl who could write such a simple and lovely book." –USA Today"A Girl Named Zippy seems to be about the cleverest . . . memoir ever. [Kimmel is] a born storyteller . . . I imagine everyone in the world would be grateful for Kimmel’s book."–Orlando Sentinel"Very engaging, funny . . . it could be a cheerier version of the Leechfield, Texas, Mary Karr chronicled in The Liar’s Club, if drunks never got ugly and if fathers never took a belt to their kids."–Hartford Courant"Delightfully wry (and sometimes laugh-out-loud-funny)." –Indianapolis Star

From the Publisher

From Publishers Weekly It's a cliche to say that a good memoir reads like a well-crafted work of fiction, but Kimmel's smooth, impeccably humorous prose evokes her childhood as vividly as any novel. Born in 1965, she grew up in Mooreland, Ind., a place that by some "mysterious and powerful mathematical principle" perpetually retains a population of 300, a place where there's no point learning the street names because it's just as easy to say, "We live at the four-way stop sign." Hers is less a formal autobiography than a collection of vignettes comprising the things a small child would remember: sick birds, a new bike, reading comics at the drugstore, the mean old lady down the street. The truths of childhood are rendered in lush yet simple prose; here's Zippy describing a friend who hates wearing girls' clothes: "Julie in a dress was like the rest of us in quicksand." Over and over, we encounter pearls of third-grade wisdom revealed in a child's assured voice: "There are a finite number of times one can safely climb the same tree in a single day"; or, regarding Jesus, "Everyone around me was flat-out in love with him, and who wouldn't be? He was good with animals, he loved his mother, and he wasn't afraid of blind people." (Mar.)Forecast: Dreamy and comforting, spiced with flashes of wit, this book seems a natural for readers of the Oprah school of women's fiction (e.g., Elizabeth Berg, Janet Fitch). The startling baby photograph on the cover should catch browsers' eyes. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc. From Booklist The title is awful, but Kimmel's childhood memoir rings true. Mooreland had a population of about 300, small enough for a grade-school girl to explore every corner and have strong opinions about the town's adults. More important, however, than the mean old lady across the street and the loud old man at the drugstore were Kimmel's family (parents, older brother and sister, and various pets) and the "best friends" with whom she experienced her small world. Kimmel remembers vividly what it felt like to be a kid: the pleasure of being outdoors; the unquestioned bonds of a "best" friendship; and the oddness of many of the things adults (and teenagers) do. Even in the 1960s and 1970s (Kimmel was born in 1965), Mooreland escaped the larger society's disruptions. An empty store was a Ku Klux Klan headquarters in the 1920s, but there were no African Americans around town; a pair of hippies moved in and offered Zippy a chance to give her dad a valued present. Mary Carroll Copyright American Library Association. All rights reserved From Library Journal In this first book, Kimmel has written a love letter to her hometown of Mooreland, IN, a town with an unchanging population of 300 in America's heartland. Nicknamed "Zippy" for her energetic interpretation of a circus monkey, she could not be bothered to speak until she was three years old, and her first words involved bargaining with her father about whether or not a baby bottle was still appropriate. Born in 1965, Zippy lived in a world filled with a loving family, peculiar neighbors, and multitudes of animals, including a chicken she loved and treated like a baby. Her story is filled with good humor, fine storytelling, and acute observations of small town life. Recommended for libraries in the Midwest or with large memoir collections. If you enjoy reading about terrible things being done to animals like a bunny being nailed to a barn door but his ears then this is the book for you. Our book club chose this book to read one month and I kept trying to get through it even though I was so bothered by the animal things but the bunny was the final straw. I was sick to my stomach and could not go on. About half of our book club didn’t finish it. I’m shocked at the ratings on here.

I bought this book thinking it would remind me of my childhood, as I also grew up in a small town around the same time as the author did. But if you're envisioning barefoot summer days, playing kickball by the light of the street lamp, and catching fireflies in a mason jar, this is not the book you're looking for. A mother who tells her child she was adopted from a band of gypsies and allows her to believe it, a father who borrows multiple crates of hounds just to harass the elderly neighbor who complained about their dog barking, a brother who slaps his sister so hard he knocks her into the bathtub.... this is not your typical family. Add to that the neighbors who move in and out... well, wow. In short, she's an odd child with an odd family who lives in an odd little town filled with odd people. It might be quite entertaining to some, and the writing is good with some amusing parts, but you should just be aware that the stories are not the charming shared memories of a more innocent time that you may be expecting.

I read a library copy of this wonderful book years ago and was happy to discover that's it's just as good as i remember it - fascinating and frequently laugh-out-loud funny. It requires great talent to tell the story of a hard-scrabble childhood without being grim or sentimental. The author's method of simply relating her childhood experiences as she remembers them, without editorializing or explaining is totally effective. Most of us can remember the events of childhood, but find it impossible to capture our feelings about them. It's a rare writer who can put into words the unique way that a child views the world. The adults and children who peopled the author's childhood and the things they did weren't odd or evil or incomprehensible to her, they simply WERE. A child accepts the circumstances of his life as the norm. What does he have to compare it to?To call her family dysfunctional barely scratches the surface. Her father's drinking, gambling, and general selfishness limited his ability to be a husband and father, but it was his anger that hung like smoke over the family and affected everything in their lives. His wife retreated into depression and the solace of books. His son absorbed his father's anger and made it his own. His oldest daughter - beautiful, popular, and terrified - married at 18. That was how girls got away from home back then. His youngest daughter remembers her father's kindnesses to her, his occasional patience with her with her oddness, and the companionship that he shared with no one else in his family. But her story ends before puberty. When she stopped being Daddy's Little Pal and morphed into that despised thing - a female - did his attitude change? I suspect so.This book raises more questions than it answers. I read her follow-up book about her mother breaking from her sterile life, going to college, and becoming a surprising success. I remember it as being even better than this one and I'm anxious to re-read it. But there are still questions. Why did the family move from Muncie, Indiana (a large city with more opportunities) to the barren spot called Moreland? What was the attraction there? What was the source of her father's anger? Did his son inherit a mental illness that cut him off from the world or learn it at his father's knee? How did the author manage to escape this life and go on to success as a writer? Was it the encouragement of watching her mother's stunning revolt? Maybe when her parents are gone, she will retell the story in a different, more comprehensive way. I look forward to that.WARNING: Some of the people in this book and their actions are disgusting and horrifying by modern standards. These were poor, uneducated people. Many had moved from rural areas in the South for the better life that Midwestern factory jobs offered. Animals were for eating. Children were to be disciplined. Women were for cleaning, cooking, and child-bearing. They were behaving in the only way they knew to behave. It's easy for those of us who have lived easier lives to criticize, but is it fair? This author clearly doesn't think so. I think she has a point.

I don’t know why but I related this book so much. I think it’s because it was when I was growing up in the Midwest and although I grew up in a city, a lot of the tinsel Christmas tree and comments about the neighbors hold true no matter where you grew up. I just laughed my head off through the whole book and couldn’t wait to get back to it which is why I read it in one day. It has child like innocence but at the same time core adult truths.

I thought that Zippy might be a fun read since I too grew up in a small town in Indiana. The author gives a clear voice to a very young girl and her experiences, in a child's vision and understanding levels. But, the entire book seemed to me just a rehashing of the same small details with little being learned and little growth in the character. I get it, a small town where everyone knows everyone, a small house, riding bikes and sibling rivalry. Sadly, I lost interest early and it didn't return even though I thought the final pages were a good ending. Mostly I was happy to be done with it. If you haven't ever envisioned small town Indiana go for it but you won't need the whole book to understand the entire story.

A funny and heart-warming story which makes you laugh, cry, and enjoy this story of a small town girl and her quirky family, friends, and neighbors. I was fascinated with her language skills and development as a toddler and just went from there. Photos of the actual family and people mentioned adds to the story. With many adventures, unusual animals, the tone of a little tone where nothing every happens but everything happens, the author has really captured her family and childhood. I got this on a promotion at a low price- glad I picked it and very enjoyable true tales.

This was a very bland book for me &I read it as a filled between books as a quick easy, thoughtless read. I am not the right person to ask as I find most of these sort of books very embellished and boring. The overall book itself wasn't bad and several parts I found interesting. However, I got the book free so it was no big deal either direction. I would not have had the same feelings I'm sure it I had to purchase it. If free, it's worth a shot. If you have to pay, .... that is a choice you will have to make.

Hysterical read and well written. I enjoyed the authors style and humor. I reread many sections aloud to friends while we were traveling. Everyone enjoyed the fun parts. Not a smaltzy silly story. Genuine and the best read on a trip I’ve ever taken with me.

Soooooo I bought this because I thought it would be full of healthy recipes. .. Just opened it up. Pulled pork sandwiches. 40g of fat per serving. 15 g of saturated fat PER SERVING...Sweet and Spicy chicken..59g of sugar per serving... While these things may taste good, i didnt order "Unhealthy but great tasting slow cooker meals".The work healthy needs to be removed. Waste of money.Edit: made the hamburger stew recipe. No taste at all. Good lord how did this book make it to print

In the community of Foodies and Home-Chefs that I interact with in person and on social media, most of us own a Slow Cooker. Almost anyone I've talked to has an established two or three dishes that they love to make in a Slow Cooker - Chili, Short Ribs, etc. Of course, everyone loves the idea of having a Slow Cooker do all the work - while we're at work - and coming home to a single-pot delicious dinner! However, we don't have the arsenal of knowledge or recipes to get the real value from our Slow Cookers. Here in "The Easy and Healthy Slow Cooker Cookbook", author Shannon Epstein has absolutely unleashed the potential of the Slow Cooker, without the headaches, without the exotic hard-to-find ingredients, without the trial-and-error, without the guilt, and most importantly without the huge expense! Unlike other recipes posted randomly online, the Author has absolutely done her homework...meticulously documenting each recipe and step, having perfected each dish, herself. One key value that stands out immediately after your first recipe is: We can trust her - The recipes do work and render spectacular results! I've already tried the Steak Fajitas recipe (Page 128) which in flavor and texture far surpassed anything I had ever tried on my own. The other morning, my family was astounded by the Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal (Page 26). I can't wait for my next step - to go through Section 6 - Chicken & Turkey!Another major value is for those of us that are health conscious, (or trying to get there, like me) vegetarian or vegan. Read the Introduction thoroughly. In an excellent prelude, the Author focuses around the need for healthy alternatives to what we're currently doing - take out, unhealthy fast meals and processed foods. Every recipe has the healthiest possible version of that dish, well-thought out and fail-safe! There's really something for everyone, including several vegan and paleo recipes.Another benefit, In my humble opinion, is that the book will pay for itself in a week (or less). Like most folks, I do spend entirely too much on my weekly grocery bill, and often select not-healthiest choices - all due to lack of planning. This weekend, I took the book to the supermarket, with Post-It bookmarks on the recipes I wanted to try first. At the end of this excursion, I had a substantially lower total at the register, than usual. You'll also pay less in electric/gas/propane. The Slow Cooker is also far more energy-efficient that other forms of cooking, I understand.Be sure to follow @fitslowcookerqueen on social media. I’ve been followers on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, for some time! Her posts are enjoyable and creative! She's responsive and patient with questions, and always very supportive!Bottom line, it's the best $17 you'll ever spend. Happy Slow-Cooking!

So many cookbooks have some recipes that are great and some that you wonder if the author just needed to fill some space. This is NOT one of those cookbooks. I’ve cooked almost every chicken and turkey recipe in the book and they have all been terrific. I no long even touch my other crockpot cookbooks because this one is a sure thing every time. The recipes are so easy that I can quickly toss them together before work. Most of the ingredients are pretty normal, which I always appreciate. The instructions are easy to understand and each recipe has tips and suggestions listed with it.If you are a crocker, crock with this cookbook!

Got this as a gift for a coworker and his family. They have always eaten terribly, and they are just now starting to see what a detriment this is as older family members are having serious, yet preventable, health concerns. I've been trying to informally coach him in healthy eating for over two years, and this is the first thing to actually work. They've been learning so much and eating well for several weeks...and they're enjoying it! This man has refused to eat almost any vegetable for his 50+ years and will now gladly eat a recipe full of peppers and onions (he hated those more than anything previously). They love how fast, easy, and healthy these recipes are.

Who doesn't appreciate a cookbook that offers incredibly SIMPLE prep and go whole food meals especially for people on the go and that want something to eat that is healthy and quick for themselves and their families!? I am a busy Wife and Busy mother of two and with my kids schedules I need something that can be made easy in a "Slow Cooker," and that tastes AMAZING. What distinguishes Shannon Epstein’s work isn’t just the recipes she produces, but the originality, particularly in the creativity of her ingredient combinations and the healthy aspect of the ingredients she uses-fresh natural ingredients not high in fat and sodium. I highly recommend trying the following which are my favs "Vegetable Frittata, Tex- Mex Chicken Soup, Lemon Pepper Chicken and Brown Rice, Jerk Chicken with Corn and Black Beans, and Berry Crisp- Get this Book and Enjoy!

Just made the pot roast and really enjoyed it. Very easy recipes and nice variety of choices. I like that there are lots of extra cooking tips throughout the book.

Bought it as a gift for a family member. Looked through it before I gave to away. Lots of good recipes. Excited to go over for dinner and try some of the recipes.

I purchased this book as a shower gift along with a Crockpot. The newly married couple say that their Crockpot is a mainstay and they love the recipe book. They are both nurses and very health conscious.

FABULOUS

We forgot to bring it along on the trip, but still utilized it for many searches and planning before the trip. we will definitely bring it with on out next Vegas experience!

DK Top 10 guides are fabulous references, especially for short trips where one has to prioritize in order to maximize vacation time. The pictures are a nice addition to the book and most of the lists are helpful. As with any list that ranks items/places/people, it is highly subjective to individual taste. Nevertheless, this book is still useful to plan your trip to Vegas.Being a little, short book, this guide isn't as comprehensive as other books. This guide is short on good dining tips, which I would recommend online food forums or websites anyway. Also, this book is short on the practical information that other books include in the normal appendix section. Some of the information is outdated, which misled me to an attraction that no longer existed when I was in LV. Specifically, I walked all the way to the Hilton to check out the Star Trek Experience attraction, only to find out at the end of a 3-mile trek, that the attraction was taken down last year.Overall, this guide is good for a short trip. It will help you get an idea to what not to miss and will assist in prioritizing. However, for more up-to-date and practical information, I would recommend other more comprehensive guide books or the internet.

This book lists the Tropicana as the #2 hotel after all the big themed hotels. I chose the Tropicana over two other hotels based on this book's rating, since I've had luck with these Top 10 guides for other cities like Cancun, San Fran, and Seattle. This book is a bit outdated, but even a couple of years back, the Tropicana couldn't have deserved to be #2. In fact, I would rate it #2 on the list of the worst hotels I've ever stayed in.We booked a Garden room, but they put us in a Tower room at first. The hallways were dark, with peeling wallpaper and damaged wood trim. The elevators had poorly-painted pictures on the door with the paint peeling off. Our non-smoking room smelled of smoke and we couldn't get the window open, so we called the desk and they sent someone to spray it down, adding more of whatever odor was already attempting to cover the cigarette stench. We went back to the desk and got the Garden room we had paid for, which was a step up, but not far up. I had to pick the toilet seat up off of the bathroom floor and reattach it. The hot water in the bathtub wouldn't completely turn off. The air wasn't turning on, so I opened the balcony door, kicking over a half-empty beer can as I stepped out. Our departing flight got canceled and we had to stay an extra night, so we booked a hotel that was luxurious in comparison to the Tropicana - the Comfort Inn!

We used this guide in March and found it most helpful in determining which places we'd like to see and what to do in the three days there. The Around the Region section is perfect for those of you who plan to be in Vegas 4-5 days or longer. From festivals, spas, outdoor activities, buffets to the grandest resorts...everything is covered with great photos for visually-based decisions. I would recommend this for all first time Vegas visitors.

This Top 10 Las Vegas book is simple to use, but provides all the information you need to enjoy a short stay in Las Vegas. It will keep you occupied with things to do between 1-2 weeks. For longer-term stays, try using a more comprehensive guide. The Eyewitness Guide to Southwest USA & Las Vegas is a letdown, though. Ironically, it covers less of Las Vegas than the Top 10 guide does.

It was a good book with a great list of top 10 things but the problem is that the times and stuff in the book are way outdated. Don't use this book to go by the times that the hotels do their performaces. It does help to rate places well but I was pretty disappointed in the information. I would suggest you get the 2006 guide to vegas because it is a lot more helpful.

I am planning to go to Las Vegas and so I bought this book. This is really useful. I especially like the photos and they make me more looking forward to my trip. Of course, since this is a pocket book, you cannot expect too much detail from it. However, this is more than enough for me who is going for a 5- to 6-day trip.
