A fascinating look at Muslim life in Cairo at the beginning of the 20th century. The cloistered lives of the women seem almost like exaggerations at times; they are expected to live their lives entirely inside the home and under cover. In fact, a hidden life is seen as a privilege that is not provided to women of the lower classes. Yet the women live in comfortable innocence, with great faith in god, and enormous, protective love for their families. The daily coffee hour, attended by all the family except the father, is full of teasing, love, news, and debate. The lives of the women seem so good, so safe and happy, especially in contrast to the hypocritical, vice-ridden lives of the autocratic, adulterous, self-important adult men. (Yet even these men are depicted with compassion and understanding, so that one understands the roots of their hypocrisy and sees their humanity.) The one pure and honest man pays for his integrity -- in fact, the whole family pays. And the young boy, emerging slowly from his childhood in this first book of the trilogy, appears to be the hope for the future.

Beautifully written, gently flowing story of a Muslim family in Cairo in the early part of the 1900's. Wonderful characterisation of all the family members from the despotic father who enjoyed the best of both worlds, his peace making but submissive wife Amina and his very different offspring. My favourite being Kamal with his quest for knowledge and his wide eyed innocence. Will hopefully get to the other two novels in the series very soon. A different way of life, a different culture but at heart the story of a family.

“Habit woke her at this hour. It was an old habit she had developed when young and it had stayed with her as she matured. She had learned it along with the other rules of married life. She woke up at midnight to await her husband’s return from his evening’s entertainment. Then she would serve him until he went to sleep.”Originally published in 1956 in Arabic, Palace Walk is the first part of trilogy written by Nobel Prize winner Naguib Mahfouz. From the opening pages, the reader is given a glimpse into the life of a Cairo family near the end of the first world war. The father, a conservative Muslim, keeps his women confined to their home, and yet himself carouses at night, drinking and having affairs with various women. He rules his sons with an iron fist, and yet they each, in their own way, rebel against him. When WW I ends, Egypt is embroiled in a push for independence from Britain, and the family is caught up in the struggle. This book is masterful on many levels. First, the story is excellent. It had me hooked immediately. Second, there is a great opportunity to learn about Egypt on the eve of independence, and the life of a Muslim family faced with political and cultural change. Third, I loved the subtle comparison of the oppression enforced by the family patriarch when placed next to their outrage against British oppression. Simply brilliant.

WOW! I found it so difficult to read this story of a father whose children totally feared him, of a wife who was a prisoner in her own home, and the father's affairs while always professing his love for Allah. What an insightful book, if it tells an accurate picture of Cairo Egypt at this period of time. The characters are well drawn, but lead such sad lives throughout. I will not read the others in this trilogy, but was glad to have read this, just for the look at this culture.

Palace Walk, Bayn al-Qasrayn, is a street in Cairo, Egypt, where Ahmad Abd al-Jawad lives with his second wife, three sons, and two daughters. At the beginning of the book, World War I is winding down and Egypt is still an English protectorate. PALACE WALK is written in omniscient point of view with shifting viewpoints. Ahmad Abd al Jawad, however, is the main character. He rules his household with an iron fist. His wife is forbidden to leave the house; his daughters must never be seen by a man until after their marriages are arranged. However, Jawad has a hidden side to his personality. After working all day at a kind of grocery store he owns, he spends his nights partying with his friends and cheating on his wife. He is the "life of the party," the direct opposite of the way he behaves around his family. His sons have never even seen him smile. Yasin, Jawad's adult son from his first marriage, is the spitting image of the old man. He spends his nights drinking and carousing, but he suffers from an almost total lack of self control. Fahmy, the second son, is a law student. His story line focuses on Egypt's fight for independence once the war is over. Khadija is the older daughter, who, unfortunately, has her father's nose and little prospects for a husband; she also has a biting sense of humor; Aisha is the beautiful second daughter who shames Khadija by marrying first. Kamal, is a mischievous ten-year-old. Much of Jamal's dialogue consists of quotes from the Koran; Jawad also attends mosque with his sons and has a prayer rug in his bedroom. Still, religion seems to be rather low on Jawad's list of priorities. Much of the narrative includes internal monologues where Jawad congratulates himself on what a good father, businessman, and patriot he is. He sees absolutely no problem with his carousing as long as he meets his religious expectations. The real worth of PALACE WALK in my mind is Mahfouz's employing the Arab family to show that there isn't a whole lot of difference in families the world over. Yasin, Fahmy and the girls meet during coffee hour, during which time they tease each other unrelentingly, just like brothers and sisters in America. They gossip and spy on their neighbors; they argue about how to deal with their father. For me, the real star of the novel is Kamal. He doesn't have a problem with making friends with the British soldiers, despite the fact that his brother Yasin is called a traitor for doing the same thing. He's the only one in the family who has the courage to stand up to his father's bullying, although he gets his "ears smoked" in the process. The ending is definitely ironic. It has to do with Jawad's ambivalence toward his son Fahmy's "freedon fighting." Jawad hates the idea of his son's defiance (Fahmy wouldn't swear on the Koran to stay away from the demonstrations against the protectorate), but he wouldn't mind having a patriot son to brag about to his carousing friends.

Review

“A careful comparison of Huang’s translation with the Wilhelm, Legge, and Blofeld versions reveals its superiority in nearly every respect. Readers interested in acquainting themselves with the I Ching for the first time need to look no further; those who have formed a deep personal attachment to a previous translation owe it to themselves to explore this one as well.” (Intuition)“What is constant through this translation is both a sense of tradition and an appreciation of modernity. Throughout is a philosophical calmness, a sense of the intellectual mingling with the spirit of things. Most importantly, Huang makes this a useful I Ching, more useful for the current temperament than older, more self-conscious translations.” (The Book Reader)“This translation, from a Taoist master, is the most extensive treatment of the subject I have ever encountered. . . . the quality of the work is so exceptional that it is hard to find fault with it. . . . if you wish to learn this system, this book will be an indispensable aid to your education. There is such a wealth of information contained in this book (each page contains the hexagram being discussed and the ideograph of the name, so there is no confusion) that it is hard to overstate the usefulness of this work. . . . This it is of use and benefit for both the novice and the more experienced user.” (Mike Gleason, Witchgrove)“Huang succeeds, also, in producing a work that keeps opening up new vistas of understanding and inviting the reader to explore the many layers of discovery offered by the mathematical, visual and literary dimensions of the classic.” (Reg Little, New Dawn)“Impressive for its scope and the clarity of its translation, this 10th anniversary edition features a new introduction by Huang on the history and application of the I-Ching, with descriptions of the commentary and divination methods.” (Book News, Inc., February 2011)“. . . this 10th Anniversary Edition of Master Huang’s translation brings new light to understanding and utilizing this ancient wisdom.” (Light of Consciousness Journal, April 2011)“This book is an absolute requirement for those who rely upon the I-Ching, and most highly recommended as a primary text for anyone wishing to learn how to use it. Highest recommendations to author and publisher - excellent!” (Elizabeth Hazel, FacingNorth.net, September 2011)

From the Inside Flap

DIVINATION / EASTERN PHILOSOPHY “A careful comparison of Huang’s translation with the Wilhelm, Legge, and Blofeld versions reveals its superiority in nearly every respect. Readers interested in acquainting themselves with the I Ching for the first time need to look no further; those who have formed a deep personal attachment to a previous translation owe it to themselves to explore this one as well.” --Intuition “What is constant through this translation is both a sense of tradition and an appreciation of modernity. Throughout is a philosophical calmness, a sense of the intellectual mingling with the spirit of things. Most importantly, Huang makes this a useful I Ching, more useful for the current temperament than older, more self-conscious translations.” --The Book Reader Translated by the eminent Taoist Master Alfred Huang, The Complete I Ching has been praised by scholars and new students of the I Ching since its first edition. A native Chinese speaker, Master Huang first translated the original ideograms of the I Ching into contemporary Chinese and then into English, bringing forth the intuitive meanings embodied in the images of the I Ching and imbuing his translation with an accuracy and authenticity not possible in other English translations. However, what makes his translation truly definitive is his return to prominence of the Ten Wings, the commentaries by Confucius that are essential to the I Ching’s insights. This 10th anniversary edition offers a thorough introduction to the history of the I Ching, how to use it, and several new divination methods; in-depth and easy-toreference translations of each hexagram name, description, and pictogram; and discussions of the interrelations between the hexagrams and the spiritual meaning of their sequence. Born in 1921, MASTER ALFRED HUANG is a professor of Taoist philosophy, former Dean of Students at Shanghai University, and a third-generation master of Wu-style Tai Chi Chuan, Chi Kung, and Oriental meditation with more than 70 years of experience. He studied the I Ching--a forbidden book at the time--in secret with one of China’s greatest I Ching masters, only to be branded an antirevolutionary by the Communist government and forced into manual labor in 1957 and imprisonment in 1966. During his 22 years of confinement, he found the strength to survive through meditation on the I Ching. Released in 1979, he emigrated to the United States. The founder of New Harmony, a nonprofit organization devoted to self-healing, and the author of The Numerology of the I Ching and Complete Tai-Chi, Master Huang lives on the island of Maui.

I just started using this, after spending a lot of time first with Wilhelm and then also with the big red Ritsema/Sabbadini/Eranos I Ching. Huang is a really welcome addition, giving historical background on some of the lines and hexagrams that is missing from the other two translations, and also a clear, well-thought-out translation. I find I'm using all 3 versions at once: Wilhelm for its smooth, familiar prose; Huang for its attention to accuracy, and explanations of historical references in the readings; and Ritsema/Sabbadini for a sense of the alternate meanings of a given character. The Kindle version has a good Table of Contents and deals well with Chinese characters. I'm using an ipad.Recommended.

Since I don't speak or read Chinese, I can't honestly judge how accurate a translation is. But having some familiarity with the other translations, I feel this one is the real deal. To begin with, the translator is a native Chinese speaker. So he is likely to understand how words are intended to be used at a certain point of history as well as the literal meaning. Those who translate literally always do a poor, unreliable job.The most popular translation goes from Chinese to German to English. I have to question how much is lost in translation. This book refers to those other translations and tells the reader why they're wanting. This translation is easy to read and understand. The Ten Wings are in italics. That makes them easy to tell where the other text ends and the Wings begin. Moreover, each hexagram is thoroughly discussed and explained.I like to read several translations but for most purposes, this is my favorite. By the way, the Kindle version is just great. You can easily go back to the index and click on the hexagram or section you want to read. And, of course, you can search for specific topics.Highly recommended.-- Susanna K. Hutcheson

I'm giving this four stars because it is obviously a masterful work and I would not want in any way to denigrate it. For my personal value it was a three and I returned it. This is my completely subjective opinion, from a brief trial reading the book. It's a comparative view between this and the Wilhelm & Baynes edition and the R.L. Wing edition, and others may have taken more time and come to a different view. This edition seems comparable to an expansion of the Commentary in the back of the Wilhelm & Baynes edition, with more detailed and annotated explanations about the relationships of the lines. It's like it says, "This is the situation, here are the elements and how they relate to each other." However, it doesn't draw a moral, tell a story, come to a conclusion, or provide much direction compared to the Wilhelm & Baynes edition. So, something about different modes of thought? Like, here's the ideogram, here are the relationships, so, given general knowledge of the workings of society at large, the story of action here is obvious. Versus here's the noun, here's the verb, in this particular situation, here's the story. I have no idea (or ideograms). The R.L. Wing edition, on the other hand, is much more contemporary in its language, and much more moralizing and prescriptive than the Wilhelm & Baynes edition. It may be worth noting that R.L. Wing is a pseudonym. If you look at the front matter on the original 1970'ish Doubleday edition, it lists about a dozen people in the acknowledgements. In the latest edition is just says "many people contributed; you know who you are."My spouse reads the R.L. Wing edition; I read Wilhelm & Baynes, and we both interpret each others casts. I find that the R.L. Wing edition pretty much follows the thought of the Wilhelm & Baynes edition. One thing that the R.L. Wing edition does is provide three different contexts for each hexagram: social/civic, business, and interpersonal relationship. Over time I've come to accept the R.L. Wing edition as valid and useful. However, the Wilhelm & Baynes edition for me strikes the right balance between situation/implication/image/metaphor and overt direction.I would really like to know how the R.L. Wing edition was synthesized. I'm thinking houseboats in Sausalito harbor, with Alan Watts and Steward Brand drifting in and out like the fog and smoke. Not to say that there isn't a full on scholarly effort there. For the book in review here, I guess it would be valuable for people who wanted more of the pure situation/implication approach, as well as detailed insight into the amazing inner workings and movements of the lines.

It is a wonderful book, for anybody who wants to study the I Ching. I love the fact that the author's intention is to be as close as possible to the original text without adding his interpretation. In my opinion, it is specially key when translating ancient sacred manuscripts that go beyond any historic time line and are as current today as they were thousands of years ago. This helps the reader have a more pure and direct experience with the text.

This is one of the very best I Ching books for the serious student. Karl Jung would have loved and used it. But if you are interested in entertainment only this might prove pedantic for you! So you heavy heavy I Ching devotees, buy this one for your bookshelf!

It is hard to find good books on I Ching. It is one of them.

Taoist Master Huang has created a masterpiece with his version of the I Ching. His perspective has added a richness to my study and his version is now my go-to for insight and inspiration. I could not recommend this version more highly.

Having been a died in the wool Wilhelm/Baynes person forever, I finally took a look over the Huang when a friend pushed me into it.He not only does his own excellent scholarship, but compares his own work to W/B and other translations, and is very open about how he comes to his own conclusions. A brilliant book for either practical divination or serious study.

This was a remarkable book, a fine look into the political hell inflicted on Ugandan's Indian citizen and non-citizens during Idi Amin's reign of terror. The author is very objective and writes very well. The customs of the Ugandan society and the India society are well presented.

I have been for the last 10-11 years part of a wonderful Book Club. We call ourselves "The Book Gems". Over the years we have read the finest literature ever. We are a very close knit group of very intelligent, passionate, knowledgable and sensitive ladies. Many times we touched on my history and how my family had ended up in Britain from Uganda. So when it came to my turn I researched and found that there were not many books written about Uganda and the experiences of what the foreign Indians went through at the hand of Dada Idi Amin. This is part of history that not many people around the world know about. I was born in Jinja Uganda in 1966 and just 6 years later President Dada Idi Amin ordered an expulsion of all Foreign Indians and he imposed the 90 day count-down. This is my history and part of my life that has been deeply engraved in my memory. Reading Child of Dandelions really bought back the reality of what had gone on during this period. I loved the book because of that. It finally allowed me to let "The Book Gems". to feel for themselves the actual truth, the fear and sacrifies my family and other indian families had to make. It is a must read for all to find the terror and the truth about Uganda and Dada Ide Amin. I also choose The Shattered Pearl by Sara Armstrong to read along side Child of Dandelions both are easy reads but the knowledge acquired is of any history lecture given on Uganda. I loved both books. Greatly written and a very compelling story.

I enjoyed the book as I had a similar background and was curious about reading someone's experience on the topic. I was younger than her at the time so it was interesting for me to see what it was like for my older cousins during Amin's deportation.

I think I had heard somewhere before about the expulsion of Indians from Uganda, but beyond a vague recollection I knew nothing about it. Nanji has done teenagers a service with this novel, which tells the story of an episode in recent African history that's been all but forgotten in the West. Idi Amin came out against the wealthy Indian minority in Uganda and gave the entire population ninety days to get out of the country or die. Sabine's family believes the order doesn't apply to them because they are Ugandan citizens who have been living in Africa for generations, but they quickly learn that such niceties mean little to the dictator and his henchmen.Nanji resists the temptation to turn the characters into stereotypes; there are no all evil or all good people in this novel, but you see shades of gray in each one: Sabine's racist but kind family friend. Sabine's family's loyal African servant, who thinks of her family as his own. Sabine's African best friend who worships Idi Amin and agrees that, for the good of Uganda, the Indians must go. Her friend's uncle who is one of those abusing the Indians but protects Sabine's family at risk to himself. Sabine's grandfather, who's carrying a secret. Occasional phrases in African and Indian languages are sprinkled throughout and add authenticity without being distracting. This story is taut and suspenseful. As the countdown continues and the tensions escalate, readers will keenly feel Sabine's fear and uncertainty. A fine work; I would recommend it, and read this author again.

Child of Dandelions is a heart-rending story of Sabine - a teenager living in Uganda. Nanji's storytelling is pure and Sabine's (mis)adventure is full of the sights and sounds of Uganda in the 1970s when Idi Amin ordered the expulsion of some 80,000 Indians.Nanji - a children's book author has made an impressive debut into the Young Adult genre with her new book!

Idi Amin's reign of terror in Uganda included the ethnic cleansing of Uganda's Indian minorities. This book, from the perspective of a young girl, a Ugandan citizen but born to a family of successful Muslim Indian businesspeople, showcases the first tendency of socialists: DIVIDE AND ATTACK. Idi Amin singled out the talented and successful people in Uganda for elimination, gave them fair warning: 90 days until the exterminations begin, but then jumped the gun and started the political killings early.Sabine, the hero of this story, watches as her culture, friendships, and family are swept away by the evil of socialism. Watches as her girlhood friend is turned into a child prostitute for the President. Watches as her family is blamed for their successes and resilience by scummy soldiers motivated by greed.Sabine develops a "blame the victim" mindset: "Aunty, it is our fault. We took advantage of them..." p. 180. Understandable in the character, but false.Parents should be aware that Sabine travels to a cold-storage warehouse where the mutilated bodies of tortured political prisoners wait to be identified and dumped into the crcodile-infested lake for disposal. She sees the maimed corpses, and so does the reader. Various types of torture-killings are described with friendly names: "helicopter treatment," "hammer treatment," etc. Also, Sabine barely escapes being raped by a soldier as she tries to get her paperwork to flee the regime. Lower age limit of 14, is my recommendation.

Classic

This is a great book. This edition is a ripoff! The publisher has simply photocopied the nearly unintelligible original and claims that this was done to preserve its authenticity. In fact, it is nearly impossible to read. What is the point of a book if you can't read it? The text is washed out, blotchy and most characters are missing several parts making it extremely difficult to decipher the words. The entire book is like a 300 page "Captcha". It is painful. I would have returned it if the deadline to do so had not passed. As it is I will probably throw it in the trash (something I've never done with a book before). It really should not be sold. There must be a version of this important work that someone has re-typeset. The cover is also stupid because it is the most un-Adirondack-like image I have ever encountered. What would posses someone to create such a terrible edition. Piece of crap. A major dis-service to the original author.

This was one of the first books I read about the Adirondacks. It is a classic in my mind. A number of articles written about the adventures of a Boston clergyman's hunting and fishing trips to the mountains were gathered into a book. His rhapsodic descriptions of the area and the healthful benefits of the "balsamic air" caught the imagination of thousands who longed for a change from the crowded city. As a consequence there was a veritable stampede to the North Woods. Unfortunately there were no facilities to accommodate them and they were unprepared for the attacks of mosquitoes and other biting insects. So seriously disillusioned were they that they they wanted to lynch MurrayNonetheless his accounts of various incidents are hilarious and entertaining. Anyone who enjoys the woods and camping will find this book great fun.Adventures in the wilderness;

I am being generous with one star. This book has a poor start and no real ending, just stopped. A waste of money.
