Western was my favorite airline in my youth and this book tells a wonderful story of how this company was a part of the largest transcontinental carrier, only to be forcefully broken apart and taken back to it's origional LA to Salt Lake City route. This well writen account tells of the many struggles of route growth, merger attempts, good and bad management, and the success of a well crafted ad campaign. Robert Sterling has an incredible grasp of airline history and how to bring the reader into the back room and inner dealings of the air companies.

Not many authors can write non-fiction that become page-turners. Robert J. Serling certainly could. He so eloquently brings out the human element of the history of companies, in this case the fascinating history of America's "most senior airline" - Western Airlines. Anyone with an interest in or connection to the airline industry of yesteryear would want this history on his/her bookshelf, probably together with the other volumes Serling wrote about American, Alaska, Continental, Eastern and TWA.

Anything Serling has written about aviation is a must-read for pilots and airplane buffs.

Engagingly written, this book traces the history of WAL from the days of biplanes to the advent of the DC-10. It's grounded in interviews with many who were there and features wonderful anecdotes of the kind you might hear if a bunch of old airline people got together for a few beers. It is also the story of old-school management, both visionary and short-sighted. Western experienced more than its share of turmoil at the top, and Serling documents this with insight into the personalities as well as the issues. Though the story ends in the mid-70s, before deregulation, it is nonetheless a fascinating look at the nuts and bolts of the airline business in its early decades.

However, almost all of the 50+ interviews are limited to just two pages, with each interviewee answering just a couple of questions. The latter portions of the book are dedicated to some light advice on music production and the business of music, as well some speculation on the future of the music industry. Perhaps there are just too many topics to allow any one topic to receive a satisfying treatment. Many of the interviews read like an article you would find in Sound on Sound, Electronic Musician or such magazines (that's a good thing) but are even skimpier on content and cover a far-reaching range of topics. This biggest disappointment, however, is the DVD. It mostly contains audio excerpts of the telephone interviews and after a while you just lose interest clicking around on them. There are only a few performance-oriented video clips, but these are not the best quality and their content is of questionable interest. All in all, I think the book has some interesting elements but I'm not sure there's enough there to justify the space on your bookshelf. My advice would be to flip through it at a bookstore, read two or three of the interviews before ordering it.

I purchased the 'The Art Of Digital Music' after some email contact with the author and the realization of several shared interests that are addressed on a certain level in the book. It's not an encyclopedic tome - more a skim of the mindsets of many, many artists, technicians and producers. Two pages per person. It's a great read in the sense of broadening your working methods or notions about things, breaking out of ruts or certain pre-conceived notions about the creative process. Some very simple (but very profound) words of wisdom are contained within. I recommend it for anyone who feels they've perhaps become too structured and wants some fresh perspective. The one thing that may bother some is the extensive discussion in the interviews about selling music online and DRM. I mention this because the book was published before the ubiquitous iPod, iTunes Music Store and all that followed had come on the scene. So there's a lot of speculation about what shape things could, should or would take but, for the most part, it's already happened. Just a heads up to those who would strain their patience reading about foregone conclusions. I personally still found it interesting.

I knew before purchasing this book that it was from 2005, but still found it full of useful information and insights. Great interviews featuring dozens of famous musicians and producers that cover the full spectrum of musical genres. Also, practical info on setting up studio recording, mixing, etc. An interesting chapter on the future of digital music, since the technology has changed so rapidly. Some of the predictions were on the money, while others missed the mark. Originally, this book was $27.95, but I purchased it on Amazon for less than $3.00, plus a slight shipping charge. For anyone, (like myself), who's venturing into making digital music in a home studio setting, this is a great read and reference.

Many of them I was familiar with but have a whole new respect for after reading this book. The interviews are intelligent and creative, questions I would have asked them myself.The tips and advice are invaluable as well. Rarely do you find a book on digital technology that you can't put down, but this is one of them.For anyone who loves music and technology, this book is a must.

The book was poorly made. The binding was broken and the edges of the book were torn and ragged. I returned the book.It’s a shame as the art work and commentary inside seemed like it would be interesting.A redesign and reprint of this book would be appreciated.

This book is not only a great & in depth read, but it also looks stunning. The reflective silver color, with the angel on the front is absolutely gorgeous. This is a great book to add to any collection. Get it!

This is a great little hard cover book. The pictures are beautiful and the writing clear on the page. The binding could be a little bit more sturdy. Not for use with kids under 10 alone I would say.

Beautiful illistrations but too small! Very hard to read. The pictures are very colorful! I got this as a gift for my step mother who loves Angels. I hope she likes this book! Meant for a display on her coffee table.
