About the Author

Mel Bartholomew was the founder and inventor of the Square Foot Gardening method and the author of All New Square Foot Gardening, the best-selling gardening book in America for a generation. The guide has sold 2.5 million copies since Bartholomew wrote the book in 1981. He hosted a PBS TV show for five years, and then was telecast for three more years on the Learning Channel and Discovery Network. I have all of the books written by Mel Bartholomew about Square Foot gardening. This one updates the material and is much easier to read. Mel would be proud of what the SFG Foundation has written. I recommend this for anyone who wants to start an easier method to home gardening.

I’ve heard this was THE book to start with for beginner gardeners and so glad we did. It covers all of the basics and more advanced projects. Illustrations are excellent and the author is thorough in explaining concepts.

The new edition is better than ever. I use the book as a bible for the classes I teach. And I use it as my guide for my own personal organic gardening.

This is a great book. The third edition has been updated with color photographs to be more user friendly.

This book is always a pleasure to read - approachable and easy to understand. I give it out often for those just starting their gardening adventures.

This is my third version. Always informative and practical.

the squiggle and cartoons are cute but it is really like reading someone's very boring diary. Her life is dull in this year. Painful.

This is a deeply engrossing read and a well-crafted visual representation of the daily thoughts and worklife of a fascinating artist.A pastiche of comic book, collage and diary, "365 Days" covers the span of about a year in the life of the artist. Not only does this work provide an insight into the fascinating world-view of the author/artist, it is also laced with keen observations of human behavior (other friends and artists as well as members of her own family), assessments of media (the news coverage leading up to and into the invasion of and war in Iraq as well as descriptions of movies or books that Ms. Doucet encounters). Doucet takes you inside her head where you learn that, even though she is a prolific artist, she constantly worries about not getting enough done, about the logistics of collaborating with other artists, and how to make enough money to live and eat. Although her insights into other people are fascinating, at all times the star of "365 Days" is Doucet herself.The art of the last century was collage and pastiche, while the diaristic impulse has defined the start of this century (Blogs, YouTube, comic books, the popularity in the publishing world of diaries and memoirs, etc.). This book combines these two forms in new and unique ways.Julie Doucet came to prominence as a comic book artist over the early 1990s with a dark and unique sense of humor who was willing to expose her own quirks and proclivities (see her New York Diaries for instance) in almost excruciating detail. After having "given up" being a comic book artist, she has instead concentrated on linocut, silkscreening and collage. In this book she combines her drawings with cutout words and images and also describes her daily practice as an artist working on her silkscreening and linocut prints.This is an ambitious, yet highly personal work that will inspire and intrigue. I would suggest readingPaschal Beverly Randolph: A Nineteenth-Century Black American Spiritualist, Rosicrucian, and Sex Magician (Suny Series in Western Esoteric Traditions)first, however; as you will get more out of it if you have a context to put it in.Enjoy!

The Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor was a fraternal order founded in the 19th century by the enigmatic Max Theon. People like Max Theon are usually described as 'enigmatic' or 'shadowy' and with good reason. But this book goes a long way toward shedding some light on Theon, Peter Davidson, Paschal Beverly Randolph, Emma Hardinge Britten, and others, all of whom had a great deal to do with the channeling of the American current of Magick. The research conducted by the authors' is truly impressive, although it simply left me hungry for more information. (Mr. Deveney has also written a marvelous biography of the mystic and seer, P.B. Randolph.) Read carefully, however, this book provides the background to the secret history of our times.

The Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor has become "en vogue" lately among certain circles of occultists and occult historians. This book, unlike others written by persons of questionable academic reputation, gives a complete and unbiased account of the HBL, its structure, system, and personalities.Complete and concise, contains several useful documents including sources for high degree OTO materials, this book is a must-have in the library of any serious occultist.

I was surprised by the rigor of this study, it's a valuable source book providing interested students of history with a background to the HBoL, it's movers and shakers, and the general occult demimonde milieu they occupied.Students of 19th century esoteric history will find it valuable. I recommend Rene Guenon's history of Theosophy along with it. While Guenon's intent was polemical, he assembled a good body of facts and observations that overlap heavily with the materials Godwin assembled here.This book is well recommended.
