Contrary to many other reviewers, I loved the Booster Gold/What if... buildup. King created a clever alternate timeline and displayed the humor he's honed over the last year or so.Then came "The Wedding." What a crock. Totally botched it. The whole thing built to "Enh...nevermind" when all the character beats leading up to it were SO GOOD. Loved the Bruce/Alfred embrace. Never seen that and it was the perfect time for it. Show me the difficult dynamics of trying to make it work!! Show us the happy/complacent Batman who makes a hash of fighting crime. The family reactions. So much fertile ground to cover that will never be uncovered. Ugh.As bold and intriguing as the previous year's lead up has been, this was a complete chicken-s#it move by Tom King.

3.5 starsI love Batman (who doesn't) and really like the work that Tom King has done in comics (Vision, Sheriff of Babylon, Omega Men). King's work on Batman is actually my least favorite stuff he's done. The first couple trades in this run were weak, but they got quite strong with 4 and 5.This volume collects 45 to 50 (six issues, with 50 being a double sized one). There are three stories. A three-part story involving Booster Gold, time travel, Thomas and Martha Wayne, and what Bruce and the world would be like if the night they saw Zorro ended differently. There are some cool moments in the story, but it should be a "DC What IF?" story rather than part of a regular run. There is a two-part Joker story. It's decent - King's Joker is incredibly murderous but his dialogue isn't always there. Issue #50 involves Bruce and Selina writing to each other while the action of the lead up to the wedding goes on in alternate pages. There are some great scenes (Bruce and Alfred). A variety of Batman artists work on various pages - some of the pages are spectacular. I normally don't like changing artists every few pages, but this is a nice survey.I'll keep reading.

I've generally enjoyed Tom King's run on Batman so far. There have sometimes been some bumps, but King's strong thematic writing and thoughtful use of story and panel structure have always kept me captivated. But, that being said, this is possibly the first trade where I had trouble embracing the lead up to the wedding, starting with the Booster Gold story. While it has a few interesting ideas, Booster Gold is portrayed as so tone-deaf and almost eerily daft (nonchalantly observing a character kill themselves, for example) that I found his "wedding gift" story difficult to enjoy. While the portrayal of Gold is not entirely out of sync with the character in some incarnations, it comes off as extreme to the point of making him devoid of almost any common sense. And, in the end, I'm not really a fan of storylines driven by severe misunderstandings or characters acting in frustrating ways for the sake of propelling plot.Likewise, the multi-part Joker story that follows is, while a bit better--with a few intriguing tidbits as the Joker swings from almost boyishly innocent to frighteningly psychotic and violent--likewise takes Joker to extremes that make it difficult to stay immersed in the story. One minute, he is shooting hostages. The next, he is chatting with Catwoman like they are old girlfriends, with dialogue that seems inconsistent from page to page. I appreciate the attempt at humor and realism, and trying to show different aspects of the Joker and almost humanize him. But something about the jarring changes in tone and pacing made the story, and its escalating events and ending, seem highly artificial and contrived.Lastly, without spoiling the final issue (the ending of which was highly-publicized and spoiled for many), I thought the conclusion was representative of the problems in the above stories, i.e. seemingly inconsistent or frustrating character decisions wrapped in artificial storytelling devices. The issue contains a series of throwbacks to former Batman artists and styles, which was a nice touch in theory, but it was generally unrelated to the ultimate plot development, and came off more like artifice for its own sake--not entirely pointless, but didn't enhance the story, which ended up being dragged out.Ultimately, I would recommend this to any fan of King and of Batman, but would caution that it's definitely a big dip in the momentum and quality of the storytelling so far. That being said, it's possible that a lot of this will pick up depending on where King takes Batman next, and perhaps some of this will make more sense in context. Will have to see.

The main story resolves about a "What if...?" scenario which is the product of a rather ambitious, yet unsuccessful good will. We get to see a completely different idea of what became of Gotham city and the Justice League under different circumstances, maybe a little bit too extreme given the idea that the world is highly dependent on the Caped Crusader to ridiculous points.Again, as this is just an alternative reality, you can get to enjoy the improbabilities of its exaggerations without troubling the known canon.Another chapter included in it is a rather unusual encounter between the Joker and Catwoman where they end up beaten up next to each other and begin to do remembrance fleshing out the relationship between the Gotham Underworld.Although not breathtaking, or epic it's still a nice reading.

This was perfect. Some of Batmans most iconic enemies hit him were it hurts most, his heart. This is the midpoint of an 101 issue Batman run, it stirred up quite the ruckus for good reason. Love or Hate it, this comic does its job. Tom King not only writes in a fresh, original, thought provoking way, but he pays a great deal of homage to batmans history. Hes enriched what's come before while giving us something we've never seen before. Its absolutely splendid, buy all the volumes 1-7 it's all one big story. Skip Night of the Monstermen though, that's Orlando's story and not even in Rebirth Batman TPB's 1-7.

Hopefully talking to the counseler after the shooting will help, if she opens up.Not sure she can.It'd be cool if Chiara got PJ a place in her building.I wonder if it means anything that Chiara's father came to the hospital.Most of the story is a fairly detailed police procedural, about following dead endsand chasing different leads.It's frustrating, but fascinating.

Heavy, thick book that will take you many moons to read. But it has the data in it if you "need to know". Highly recommend

Missing manual seems to be a bit of a sad joke. What is missing is some obvious information regarding Office 2010. Because these features are offered in MS Word, I'll give two examples -- what are the real keyboard shortcuts and how do you print renumbered pages from a section. When I say "real shortcuts" I mean, yes, keyboard "shortcuts" are offered in passing, but they are convoluted and awkward to use. Take a simple task like centering text (or a paragraph) the manual gives this string of commands ALT, H, AC: Press ALT (display keyboard shortcuts) , then press H (for Home), then then quickly press AC (which does the actual centering. I guess that's what AC means) , but there are easier methods, Ctrl-e: hold the control key down then press "e", these control commands are simpler and possibly better remembered than the ALT method.. Tables summarizing these Control commands are are smeared across the internet, so how come such a table could not have been included in this so-called missing manual. I'll give the author a break and consider it an "editorial" decision.My second gripe is about "breaking a document into sections". Easy to do, but lets say you have a sectioned document and you edit a portion of a section (that does not renumber the pages in that section). Here this "manual" is silent on this. But again one can pursue an internet death march and find the information. Unfortunately, the methods did not work as expected. I have a duplex printer I want pages to print recto-verso on the sheet. What I got was two sheet print out: recto page on one, and verso page on another. I'm still looking (or waiting for the Microsoft fix). These are only two problems I've had with MS Word and Missing Manual solutions. If you are a word processor and don't have need for such subtle refinements, then you're in fairly good shape with this "manual". If you're a writer or format docs for proofing not so much.

I have been buying copies of this for all my friends who are using 2010. The motto of The Missing Manual series is "the book they should have put in the box." How very true! This is dauntingly thick because it covers ALL the programs on 2010, but it is the usual Missing Manual format: just read down the table of contents to see what you want to do ("Save a document," for example), then turn to the 2-3 pages that tell you just how to go about it. Highly recommended!

Clearly written and should be good for both new and existing users of Microsoft Office.For me, mostly an update, but found lots of new tips that would not have been noticed otherwise. Coming from Office 2003, the "Ribbon" was new, but this book explained that concept well. Hated it at first, but with the support of this manual, like it now.The only disappointing thing was the lack of pivot table discussion in the Excel section.

I like the book; the "Missing Manual" series is uniformly good and affordable. ( I just don't like Office 2010, with its space-wasting Rube Goldberg "ribbon" and the need to take too many steps to do simple things.)

I have to say I have never been disappointed by any "Missing Manual" book and I have read over 10 different ones. So as the title states "missing manual" it cover all the points that should of come with the product, says it all. I will as always recommend this book as all others from this line.

Very helpful book. Well organized and easy to read. Easy to find solutions you are most interested in finding. It is a BIG book and is my "go to" for any questions I have about office. I am a great fan of "The Missing Manual" series.

If you learn best from reading superbly organized and crystal-clear writing, buy this book now! The author "positions" you vis-a-vis what you wish to do. You can determine if you are on the "doorstep" of the specific instructions you need BEFORE "stepping into" the instructions.The author also comments on related situations which you might/might not want to cover at that moment.

This is written so that almost anybody should be able to complete any task desired. It is not written for the engineer that probably has a larger computer vocabulary. I have the manufacturers manual which does at times delve much deeper into a subject. But this can get confusing and not as easy to follow. Money well spent.

I bought this to teach a student in Moscow. There are a lot of things I like about it. For example, each chapter has a section for recognition practice (choose the word you hear) and dictation practice. The accompanying CDs make it easy for the student to work independently of the teacher.I used this in conjunction with "Mastering the American Accent" which I like because it offers MORE practice sentences which are more challenging than those in "Pronounce it Perfectly". Also, "Mastering the American Accent" has a section in the back, which tells you which sounds to focus on for each language group. This makes it easier to put together a syllabus.So, 4 stars. A good book, but I like to use it with a second source.

About the Author

Mavis Gallant was born in Montreal and worked as a journalist at the Montreal Standard before moving to Europe to devote herself to writing fiction. After traveling extensively she settled in Paris, where she still resides. She is the recipient of the 2002 Rea Award for the Short Story and the 2004 PEN/Nabokov Award for lifetime achievement. New York Review Books Classics has published two previous collections of Gallant's stories, Paris Stories, selected and introduced by Michael Ondaatje (2002), and Varieties of Exile, selected and introduced by Russell Banks (2003).Jhumpa Lahiri is the author of the short-story collections Unaccustomed Earth and Interpreter of Maladies, and of a novel, The Namesake. Her interview with Mavis Gallant appeared in the summer 2009 issue of Granta.

I remember my mother speaking of Mavis Gallant as she read the author's stories in The New Yorker. She was onto a good thing that took me much longer to realize. Gallant's writing reminds me of Yates and Cheever. This collection takes us all over including Montreal, New York, and Paris. My favorites were Madeline's Birthday, Thieves and Rascals, and Bernadette. The stories are melancholy, if not sad, but there is an intriguing humour in every one of them. A word of warning, the introduction is a wonderful tribute to Gallant by Jhumpa Lahiri but is so detailed that I wished I had read it after reading the stories themselves (the title of this review is taken from that Introduction).

What an extraordinary writer ! Exquisite glimpses into characters, their lives, their times and their scenes. Can anyone write like this anymore ?No annoying preaching, gotchas, or personal intrusion....just pure, crystalline vision. Put down your "smart" phone...take a vacation fromthe trivial net of social media..... and read humane, lovely, unsentimental literature by a true master of the medium. No gimmicks...just talent.

If you're the type of reader who loves well-observed, well-drawn "slice of life" stories, this collection should prove very satisfying. Gallant's prose is excellent, even if, in my mind, the narrator of these stories was always Judi Dench. I look forward to reading more by this author.

Mavis Gallant has an uncanny ability to create and develop interesting characters within the confines of a short story. She is a master of her craft.
