I have been a lover of mystery books and intelligence gathering almost since I learned to read. As both a literature buff and history buff, delving into the evolution of intelligence gathering (coupled with the ever-expanding technology) became almost a "must". The book is well balanced, delving into the different modalities and technology used in intelligence gathering coding, decoding, and transmission. It also features brief vignettes on particular spies who were superlative in their vocation as well as some who were not so spectacular, and some who just had amusing (or irritating) idiosynchracies that gave a smile now and then.It is, first and last, a HISTORY book -- and anyone who reads much history knows that it is very densely packed, and very slow reading. However the information one gleans about how technological advances which are not only applied to "improvement in living ease" but also in ever-more-difficult spying techniques will long be remembered.Taking the transmission of intelligence from private courier to telephone, to "Marconi wireless" to various kinds of wireless technology and "bugs" all had both strong and weak points which needed to be addressed.I gave it 4-stars because the reading is so dense and moves so slowly, and in order to follow one chain of events, other developments not used in this primary endeavor must be backtracked and introduced at a later time, so it does not lend itself to a strict chronlogy, but you find you are taking mini-backtracks exploring other methods as well.All in all, it is a very good book, but a book to be read a little bit at a time, so that there is time to "digest" it. Three Cheers to Jeffrey Richelson, who had the patience to untangle it, and present a masterful book!!

I found this book very informative on the evolution of spies. However, post cold war, this book is sparse and rather curt in it's analysis which comes to an abrupt halt during the Clinton Administration.The book ends at about the 70% marker, with an additional 30% (100 pages) of references and citations. 434 pages for the book, 534 pages in all. I recommend it if you are interested in intelligence up to and during the cold war era.. but there is really nothing insightful after the 90's.

Quite a good book.

This book was more like a text book that would be read on a college level. Like many books that we all dealt with in college it was interesting and boring throughout. I will not read it again as I do some books after a long period. Of course this is all IMHO.

I am an avid reader of history, and especially of intelligence, spying, and military history. There are few books that I have started which I have not read to completion, but this was one of them. After about 150 pages, I realized that I wasn't enjoying the book, I wasn't learning much from it, and that I wasn't in a college course, so I could just stop reading. My criticisms, in no particular order:* While Kindles seem plagued by typos, this book sets a new standard. The errors actually begin to distract from the work, although they do provide some comedy relief. My favorite- a chapter that chronicles that famous WWI event, "The Battle of the Mame". I think it was a Lucille Ball movie.* A good portion of the book is a recitation of names, dates, places and events. Some of these are important, some should be footnotes to the footnotes.* Much of the information presented is devoid of any context. As an example, one section of the book describes in detail the intelligence efforts behind the Battle of Jutland. These efforts, however, make little sense unless you have a fairly detailed appreciation of the naval tactics and geographical context of Jutland. I suspect few readers have such details committed to memory, and must, like me, resort to an external source for background material.* The author makes sweeping statements, but does not back them up. For example, Richelson credits the Nazi intelligence services with a good portion of the credit for allowing Hitler's early successes in the Rhineland, Austria and Czechoslovakia. Probably true to some extent, but certainly an opinion that requires some argument and facts to support it.* In other cases, Richelson seems shy about taking a position. Richard Sorge, a Soviet spy, provided Stalin with information that was likely the reason that the Soviets were able to concentrate the vast majority of their armies against the Germans. Without too much imagination, you could make a case that this was one of the turning points in the European Theater. While Sorge's story is told, there is but brief mention of the consequences.So in summary I found the work to be mostly a collection of facts, with some opinions thrown in but not particularly well supported. As a narrative, it falls short as well, glancing over events whose details are truly interesting and important.I'd say skip it.

For a story about international spying, the book was incredibly dry. The information was interesting, and thoroughly researched, but so far as just-for-fun reading, it's a bit of a slog.

Found this to be well written and enjoyable to read, but man, a lot of info. He does a good job covering a lot of info.

I couldnt wait to read it since im interested in this. i thought it was a great book. i cant wait to read the next one.

Somehow, I avoided reading this very short work through my years of public education and over the course of 1-2 hours recently rectified the omission, in the course of which, I realized that I had seen a cartoon adaption of the leading characters ("I used to have a friend. I petted him and squeezed him and he don't move no more.")The book is the tale of two California drifters, George and Lenny; George being the brains behind the duo and simple minded Lenny, a huge beast of a man, the brawn. The two men show up at a Salinas valley farm as day laborers, bringing in the barley harvest in an effort to "raise a stake" for purchase of their own small farm. Here we meet a collection of characters, richly drawn by Steinbeck, whose interaction lays the foundation for this excellent tale.I compare this work very favorably with Hemingway's Old Man and the Sea, a novella of comparable length and quality. Both are quite short, yet very powerful in the emotions they stir in the reader.

See, now here is a book with a good story and a writing style that draws you in. I hade recently picked up "The Catcher in The Rye" as I missed it in school, I think maybe our school was one of the ones that banned it. Anyway, I picked up the catcher to see what all the hype was about, I was kind of disappointed. Sorry, I just do not get what all the fuss and fan fair is about. But "Of Mice And Men", This is a great book. One of my favorites, Right behind Robinson Crusoe. \This book looks much like the picture but mine is more worn, has a little wear on the edges of the cover and the pages have that aged tea stained color and it smells old, Just the way I love em. Mine is actually from 1947.

This review is a work in progress. I have the 1953 book with an introduction by Joseph Henry Jackson. I found the introduction by Mr. Jackson to be very instructive and enjoyable. However it may be for more a student than the casual reader.My book is from The Viking Press. It contains six short novels. They are mostly chronological in the order that John Steinbeck published them. The one exception is that the first short novel in the book is "Tortilla Flat". The second is "The Red Pony". These were composed, I think, in the opposite order. Mr. Jackson explains this. These are followed by "Of Mice and Men", "The Moon Is Down", "Cannery Row", and "The Pearl".I read "The Red Pony First". There is a lot in "The Red Pony" which reminds me "Of Mice and Men". It is episodic. The first episode is "The Gift", which is about a child Jody, and his pony. It is beautiful, poignant, and ultimately painful. The second episode is "The Great Mountains". It actually is about a visitor to the same ranch that is the setting for first story. Jody and his family are in this story, along with an elderly visitor. The next episode is "The Promise" which is, more or less, a sequel to the first story. It is somewhat painful. The last episode is "The Leader of The People" which is a bittersweet story about a senior citizen member of the same family at the ranch. It is my personal favorite episode.I completely enjoyed this novella "Of Mice And Men". It is a relatively short work. It was written in 1937, before The Grapes of Wrath. I had previously read The Grapes of Wrath. I enjoyed this book more. I have very little formal education in regard to literature. So my opinion may be very faulty. Anyway, I felt this work was a more artistic work than The Grapes of Wrath.This work reminded me more of Ermest Hemingway. I was very impressed. As is common with many shorter works, the author leaves a lot of questions unanswered. The reader is left to speculate why certain issues develope and are resolved in certain manners. I felt all the aspects of the relationship between George and Lenny were slightly unclear. The book ended with me wishing I knew more about George. My guess is that is intentional on the part of Mr. Steinbeck.I would like to note that I purchased this "Of Mice and Men" on Kindle and at the same time purchased the audiobook narrated by Gary Sinise. I felt Mr. Sinise was really excellent and I highly recommend the audiobook version as read by Mr. Sinise. Mr. Sinise really added to the pleasure of the reading experience with his very professional performance.

Cannery Row by John SteinbeckI guess I never realized how much writing technique has changed over the years. This book make me understand the difference between then and now. It is all about a bunch of misplaced men making do with what little they have and being happy, not drowning in sorrow. Helping each other even if not totally understanding that other person. I enjoyed the book and recommend it for non-mystery readers.

Gary Sinise is the reader, which is a nice touch. I bought this audio for use in my classroom, which saves my voice. While Sinise does a great job, there are some drawbacks for using in the classroom:The CDs are not labeled with chapters and times. I originally thought there would be 2 chapters per cd but once chapter 2 ended, chapter 3 started, so this isn't the case. I can't speak for the other CDs, and perhaps this was a space issue, but a little annoying. In addition, I use the audio in different classes who are sometimes in different parts of the book, and having a Table of Contents sheet inside the box or on each CD would be great. Instead, I have to figure out what number track I have to skip to by stopping and listening if I didn't pay attention before and write down the track or time stamp during the previous reading (this can be easily forgotten if we get sidetracked or if I have to divert my attention elsewhere, which, with over 25 kids in a class, happens all the time).Sinise does a nice job lending voice to the different characters but some students find his narration boring (teenagers!), but that's subjective. He maintains an calm, monotone voice throughout the reading.Overall, if you're buying this for personal use than I would definitely recommend it; however, if you're a teacher than you may have the same issues I do. Not a deal breaker, but annoying that Penguin did not include something I thought was a given.

I hope you are able to grab the flame from this book and empower yourself with the use of wisdom Tony has put together.Basic lesson is this: You are a reflection of all of your past thoughts and actions...but you are not your past...its all in your mind stuck leaving you in a rut and this book is the tow truck to help "you" get yourself out.

I was slightly prejudiced about Tony simply because I didn't know anything about him, except he seemed to be a big loud American (all true and not a negative) and a bit too much like a religious preacher. In Ireland we're quicker to take someone down rather than build them up so people with those quick assessments will be avoided.I've read all the top 40 and probably top 100 personal development books out there. Eventually I was running out of ones to read. And I would still come across recommendations for this book every now and then. So I read it. It's brilliant and I wish I read it a few years ago.I am a willing open audience as I've previously read all the books and science information this is based on. Yet Tony brought more insight, different compelling articulation, and real world application beyond what I'd read before to have me raving about this book.It's worth more than the money charged just for the chapter on "rules" and then again for the chapter on "emotions". It's a ridiculous bargain for what I've gained from it and I've since bought it as a Kindle gift for many friends.It's a shame the Audible version is so abridged and unavailable in a full version. Maybe Tony feels it may take away from his audio products sales. I would love an unabridged Audible version and would buy it for many people as a gift.

Although I have always been impressed with Tony Robbins because of extraordinary philanthropic record, my respect for him skyrocketed when I read “Awaken the Giant Within.” This is certainly one those “change your life” books. Tony starts the book with the three steps to success, and then spends the rest of the book inspiring and guiding the reader to improve his life dramatically. The first of the three steps that Tony says is to raise your standards. By reading his approach to this fundamental concept of self-improvement, I realized that I was accepting so many things in my life that, if I would only raise my standards, would be so much improved. From the standpoint of running a business, I began to see how many more people I could help, and in my personal life, too, I realized that I certainly could increase the time I spent with my family and also pursue other personal goals as well. In fact, since I finished the book I have now gotten my spoken French to a much more fluent level and have even performed a short stand-up comedy bit to group of about fifty people.One of the themes that Tony constantly teaches is that everything we do is for one of two reasons: increase pleasure or avoid pain. He often uses weight loss strategies as a way to help readers think of ways to use the pleasure/pain principal in their lives. I decided to apply that, and started on a weight loss program, too. Although I wasn’t suffering from being terribly overweight, I had certainly let a few too many pounds slip on over the years. Moreover, I had also moved towards a less healthy diet. By internalizing Tony’s approach, I have not only cut out all processed sugars from my diet (no cakes, cookies, candy) which will lower my chances to get diabetes one day, but I also was able drop about 15 pounds, bringing me almost to my ideal weight (where I expect to be within another month or two).These are just a few examples of how reading “Awaken” has improved my life. There are many more, and I am just one of millions of people who’ve had their lives improved because of Tony Robbins. I strongly suggest this book to everyone.

Did I just pay for full price for what should be considered a free sample? I’m disappointed Amazon even considers this an “audiobook.” This short version shouldn’t even be considered abridged. There is simply SOO much text missing that you are forced to buy the book since there is not enough depth in the audio version to really grasp/understand any of the concepts. I feel deceived and scammed.

Life changing for me. It’s really helpful if you actually do what Tony suggests.I jokingly made a list of qualities I wanted in a person as well as a list of things I would not tolerate in someone. Tony suggests a much shorter list. But I was determined to get what I really wanted! I ended up with a list of 28 qualities I’d like to have in a partner. I laughed as I continued to write and thought to myself, “No wonder I’m single!”About one month later I met someone I really liked. By this time I had completely forgotten about the list. After dating for a couple of weeks, I remembered the list and I went back to read it. Not only was she was everything on the list, but I ended up adding 2 more things because of her.There’s so much more in this book than a plan to find a great match. I plan on reading this book again!

This is specifically for the Audiobook edition,The infomation provided is good, hearing it read by Tony gives you addition intensity to the work, but unfortunately, the Audiobook is Abridged, and shorter than I would have liked. It is a great companion to listen to in the car, but you also really need to get the book to get all the information.

This colorful, quirky, rhyming book full of Australian animals was a joy to read! As a teacher, I love doing a unit on Australian animals, featuring books by Mem Fox. It's delightful to find other authors branching out and filling their pages with Aussie animals, too!

Colorful illustrations and vivid verbs combine with the message that there is a perfect niche in the world for everyone. Preschool-1st graders will enjoy the frolicking rhythm and playful words and while parents and teachers will, too, they will also be able build on the important lesson included in the fun.

The book is very colorful and if your child only wants to look at pictures this may hold their attention, but it did not interest my 2 1/2 year old granddaughter's interest at all.

Illustrations are great. This is a great story about a platypus that's trying to find his place. Great way to introduce some different animals to kiddos.

I wish this cute little story was longer, my nieces and nephews are going to love this story book . Splatapus is a truly funny little character, looking for his place in the world. This will be a bed time favorite.

My 3-year-old loves and laughs at the story every time we read it together. The story has a great teaching point about self-acceptance. Easy and fun book. Great Job!
