Platt has written one of the most engaging how-to books I have ever read; he dives right into projects and encourages the reader to do the same, with pictures and text that do an amazing job of teaching concepts that simultaneously build confidence and skills you can use across a wide range of disciplines. His explanation and techniques regarding thermoforming plastic are incredibly unique & introduced me to a world of virtually limitless potential for hobbyist projects.Don't be fooled by the title, this book goes well beyond tool use and delves into template, pattern & jig making that are at the same time simple, useful and adaptable to even the most complex projects. All done with patience and humor that has left me satisfied, educated and entertained. Even learned a bunch about geometry & statistical randomness that has finally allowed me to make sense of all those concepts my 7th grade teacher failed so miserably to get across! Well done, Platt!

It's not even really mostly about power tools (though it does give some information about a few). This is a book mostly about woodworking and hand tools. I do a bit of woodworking, though I am a tech geek at heart. Reading through the book I learned a few things I didn't know.Like most Make books, Make: Tools teaches you through projects. Most of the projects are simple: a few boxes, a book shelf, some puzzles and frames. However, even if you don't do the project, you can learn a lot by just reading through it.There is a little bit of information on working with plastics, which is kind of unique. They have a project that combines plastic and wood (a clock box) and then some plastic boxes.Since things like wood shop aren't taught anymore, it can be difficult to start woodworking simple projects. There are lots of hand tools, many different varieties of wood and then when you settle on a variety, there's 1/2 in, 1/4 in, etc. This book can help a beginner navigate some of this confusion.If you're looking for power tools or tech tools, it really won't help you. It gives about a paragraph description on most power tools, and it doesn't really give any advice on what to look for or how to pick them. That being said, it's a fun read. The author says the book is aimed at people aged 10-20 and that's a good age group for this book, but I would say if you are older and clueless about tools, but long to make something out of wood, this book would be a good starting point.

I've been struggling with store bought deodorants for years so this book was a god-send for me. The ones in the mass market (Old Spice, etc) usually leave me with some strange kind of rash but, especially on hot summer days, my armpits drip like a faucet and always leave me with big, yellow pit stains. Honestly, it's disgusting just thinking about it...so anyways, I checked out this book on a whim last week on my never-ending search for new "dry armpit" strategies. I've only tried one so far (the Cool Lemon DIY Deodorant) but so far my armpits have been dry AND rash-free for the past three days! This one only had four ingredients, but I'm almost scared to try the other ones with twice the ingredients...if four ingredients solved my problem, the other ones must give me superpowers!!

My mother would always remind me that deodorant we get from market is not healthy. It has toxic chemicals that can put our health mainly at stake. I never put deo on since. I keep using natural deo's. That's why I am so into this Homemade Deodorant book. The ingredients such as Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter will create a perfect mix as deodorant. I am also challenged to try Flower Bases.The world is full of artificial contents/ chemicals, pretending it can make everything easier. While, it may do so, health is being sacrificed. Time to go for natural deos everyone!

The instructions are lacking and the recipes are hastliy thrown together. Some recipes are by weight in grams, some ounces, and some cups and table spoons. Cosmetics should have recipes by weight to ensure the proper amount of each ingredient is used. I wish I could return ebooks.

I am into sensitive skin type deodorant and I will surely try the ingredients. It is so easy and the ingredients are easy to find. I'm into Green and easy Vegan DIY deodorant recipes on Chapter 4. Pleasures and PastimesDiningIf you're looking for diverse dining experiences, you can't do much better than Switzerland, where French, Italian, or German cuisine may dominate, depending on which cantons you visit. In French areas (roughly Vaud, Geneva, Jura, Neuchâtel, and western parts of Fribourg and Valais) the cuisine is clearly Gallic, and wine stews, organ meats, and subtle sausages appear alongside standard cuisine bourgeoise: thick, rare beef entrecôte with a choice of rich sauces and truite meunière (trout dredged in flour and sizzled in butter). In the Ticino, the Italian canton, Italian cuisine appears virtually unscathed, particularly the Alpine-forest specialties of Piedmont and Lombardy (risotto, gnocchi, polenta, porcini mushrooms). The German cantons serve more pork than their neighbors and favor another standard dish that represents Switzerland though it vanishes in French-speaking or Italian-speaking areas: Rösti, a broad patty of hashbrown potatoes crisped in a skillet and often flavored with bacon, herbs, or cheese, is as prevalent in the German regions as fondue is in the French. Beyond the obvious cultural differences, Swiss cuisine is also influenced by the terrain: Mountain farmers have traditionally subsisted on such basic foods as raclette (cheese melted over broiled potatoes and garnished with pickled vegetables), while cities nurtured wealthy burghers and noblemen with the cream of the crops of outlying lands -- milkfed veal, fruits from low-lying orchards. Though fondue, Rösti, and veal are likely to be on any resort's menu these days, traces of these influences can still be found almost everywhere.HikingWhen the snow melts and the mountain streams start to flow, Switzerland takes to the hills. That the Swiss Alps are the ultimate in hiking is no secret: On a sunny day in high season in the more popular vacation areas, footpaths can be almost as crowded as a line for World Series tickets. On narrow trails, hikers walk in single file, and the more aggressive pass on the left as if on the Autobahns of Germany. However, there is an almost infinite quantity of quiet, isolated routes to be explored; if you prefer to hike in peace, head for one of the less inhabited Alpine valleys -- in the Valais or Graubünden there are several -- and strike out on your own. Each of the regional tourist departments publishes suggested hiking itineraries, and major map publishers distribute excellent topographical maps of wilderness trails. In the German-speaking region especially, hiking is a deeply rooted tradition, and people of all ages and in all physical conditions head for well-beaten paths in jeans as often as knickers, woolen stockings, rucksacks, and hiking boots.Regional CelebrationsBasel's extravagant pre-Lenten observance of Fasnacht (Carnival) -- in which up to 20,000 costumed revelers fill the streets with the sounds of fifes and drums -- is only one of the hundreds of festivals that the Swiss celebrate during the year. As if to prove that its spirit is vast despite its small size, almost every Swiss canton hosts its own popular celebration of one event or another. In Geneva, the Festival of the Escalade commemorates the heroic housewife who repelled the Savoyards by dumping hot soup on their heads. Lesser-known festivals range from the frivolous -- in the Schlitteda Engiadinaisa, young unmarried men and women ride decorated sleighs through the villages of the Engadine -- to the symbolic -- in the Landsgemeinde, the citizens of Appenzell pay homage to their country's democratic tradition by conducting a vote by public show of hands. ShoppingSwiss Army knives, Swiss watches, Swiss chocolate -- what could be more...Swiss? Though you won't find many bargains in Switzerland anytime soon, you will find some uniquely Swiss treasures. Some of the best souvenirs of this pragmatic country are typically practical, such as watches, clocks, and Swiss Army knives. Others are more luxurious, such as sweet milk chocolate: Lindt, Nestlé, and Tobler are major manufacturers. Marvelous music boxes from the watchmaking country around Lake Neuchâtel are sold in specialty shops all over the country. As one recent skier put it, "There's just more" -- more slopes; longer runs; more stunning, crisp scenery than you'll find in U.S. resorts. Any level of skier can find a resort to meet his or her needs, from a cozy family-oriented village with easy and moderate slopes to the world-class challenges at Crans-Montana, Verbier, Wengen, and Zermatt. Most of the resorts publish an area map showing their slopes and rating the trails for difficulty. Familiarize yourself with the resort's signs, including those warning of avalanche zones, before you set out.Spectator SportsIf awards were given to countries with the most unusual sports, Switzerland would win hands down. In the winter, the action centers around St. Moritz, where a frozen lake provides a novel setting for golf, polo, dogsled races, and horse races: In the Winter Golf Tournament, red balls on white "greens" are a festive sight; in the Racing Hounds Competition, a motley crew of canines races across 480 m (1,574 ft) of ice at an average speed of 90 kph (55 mph). I Am Not a Tractor is an incredibly important and enjoyable read. While many of us are conscious about the food we are buying, little has been said about the process of harvesting the vegetables and fruits. The organic label covers the process and chemicals of growing, but there is no similar label that guarantees that the food you are eating was picked by people making a living wage and working in safe conditions. This revealing story starts by exposing the growers enslaving people to pick tomatoes in Florida in the immediate past, and the steps that they took to maintain their slave labor. The twist (given away in the title) is that the workers developed a coalition and took huge steps to creating a living wage and safe working conditions by creative partnerships with buyers, distributors and ultimately the owners of the farms themselves. The template revealed by this story could easily be applied to other areas and certainly raises signifiant questions about how to identify and support businesses that pay living wages and safe working conditions. The author tells the tale in a way that bridges an entertaining story with academic rigor. If you have ever thought about things like Farm to Table, Organic, Free Trade, Free Range, Whole Foods, then this is the next book in your education.

Well researched and expertly written. The story of how farm laborers, those at the very bottom of the food production chain, began to organize themselves to achieve a degree of fairness in pay and benefits. Going back 20 to 25 years ago, those who picked the tomatoes for huge farms in Florida, were working in virtual peonage, and in some cases without clean water or bathroom facilities during long days in the fields. The book details how a small group formed a small coalition to begin to fight for basic rights. First working to get some concessions from the farm owners and wholesale corporations. Eventually finding that they must target the large fast food chains and eventually the major grocery store chains, in order to make headway in pursuit of fair food standards. The amazing part is this small coalition grew over time and eventually achieved their goals.A very interesting and informative read, for anyone interested in the back story of how our food finally gets to the restaurants and grocery stores, and the fight to ensure fairness to those at the very bottom of the chain.

As a full-time farmer myself, this book gave me hope. Yes, I've read plenty of stories that rail against the abuses of modern agriculture. But here is an inspiring, genuine success story--people standing up for themselves and making a positive change--as well as a path to a national solution. Kudos to these brave workers, they are true trailblazers.If you are interested in food policy, workers-rights, or a sustainable American food system, this is required reading. Five stars.

A hand-signed edition, this book came in gently used shape at a reasonable price. It's a fun look at the a career of fashion Jewelry maker (using paste rather than real jewels, but still bought up by the likes of Jackie O and others of her ilk) Kenneth Jay Lane, whose fab fakes could cost more than many of the Real Thing, due to his opulent style of craftsmanship and attention to detail. A fun read and a nice book for conversation.

The book is the perfect collection of information and display of some of his fine pieces. A wonderful coffee table book to pick up and peruse after you have read it from front to back. Nice to own a book about one of the most majestic jewelry minds of our time!

I am very happy with what the book is. I have not read the whole book but only glanced through. It was a terrific price for a pristine used book. It even is signed on a bookplate inside.

I really like many of the designs that Kenneth J. Lane has produced over the years and loved having a reference book of all his different styles and periods. The prose is of a chatty style that I usually am not too fond of but Mr. Lane is so upbeat and aware of the good fortune that has blessed him that you can't help but like him. The photography is wonderful and it is fun to see photos of celebrities wearing his jewels. The book could have been stronger if it has an addendix of technical information about the creation of costume jewelry or had a reference as to current pricing of some of Mr. Lane's vintage pieces. But I had many a fun evening looking and reading and will definately keep this book available for several more readings.

More of a biography of the hows and the whens of Kenneth Jay Lane and his jewelry empire. Was hoping for more of a Jewelry Reference book which this is definitely not. Feel I wasted the money I could have used for a more in depth book about KJL designs and time periods.

I first saw this book in a gorgeous "tabletop" store in Bellevue, WA where I purchased some fabulous Kenneth Lane napkin rings -- bejeweled zebras. I really bought the book for the cover picture as immediately upon seeing it I determined I was going to make such a wreath for myself. I've been accumulating the glitziest pins and earrings I could find -- ON SALE and not Kenneth Lane ($)-- for several years and I think I have just about enough to assemble it -- mine will be on either black or dark red velvet. I love jewelry, real and costume, and Kenneth Lane's "costume" is gorgeous!
