The format is a narrative inquiry and resonates like dimly perceived and remembered conversations at the kitchen table at family get togethers after the kitchen was cleaned up after dinner. The matriarchs would catch up with each other and compare notes and perspectives. The women in this collection are geographically separate but they are equal stakeholders in the conversation. This is truly “Women’s Ways of Knowing” Belinky etc all. and “In a Different Voice” Gilligan. It is delightful and enlightening to read and a joy to hear voices that are so often marginalized or silenced. I have bought several copies to share with my daughter and friends.

I was drawn to this book as I enter my seventh decade. The stories of this diverse group of women, some of whom are centenarians, give insight to women of incredible intestinal fortitude, kindness, independence, sacrifice, self-discovery, determination, and love. It is a book of lessons to be learned, lessons to be taught, and a model for a life well-lived.

I enjoyed reading about the lives of women in their 70's through 100's. It will help me appreciate things more, and value life in general!

I especially liked the short aphorisms that bluntly summed up the experience of a lifetime In a brusque sentence. “never give a man more than half your money and keep travel money set aside” are hard won words of wisdom. Also pleasant were the first person accounts of historical events.

Dr. Lois P. Frankel got it right in Ageless Women, Timeless Wisdom! This is a perfect gift for Mothers Day to all of the special women in our life's! This book will be a blessing to you and a gift from heaven to those that you share Ageless Women, Timeless Wisdom.

Interesting to read about other womens lives and what they learned from living. Their little quotes about life. It was interesting and I'm glad that I read it.

Let me just get the one bad thing out of the way. Spoiler alert for the first two chapters; Brian returns to the wild because goverment survival instructors need him to teach them survival methods. This has to be one of the most absurd plots I've ever heard for a book. The idea that the people who train Green Berets and Marine Force Recon need a teenage to teach them to live off the land is ridiculous. I have a military issue surival book meant for soldiers in case of capture that addresses many of the problems Brian faced in Hatchet. Often it provides better methods than Brian ends up using to deal with problems. Added to that is the fact that, in addition to everything else Brian faced, escaping POWs have enemy soldiers hunting them. Yet in The River, the instructors actually say neither them nor anyone they (meaning the government) know has ever been in a real survival situation. That said, once you get passed that, the book is great. It is the reason I spent several hundred dollars on a kayak. And for younger audiences, it can definately spark a life-long interest in the great outdoors.

I choose a 5 star because I am a huge fan of the Brian's series.This book gives life to Brian and through hatchet did the same this book put Brian in a situation where he had to care for himself and someone else.... though as good as this book is I feel it did not capture the survival situation that they went to do. Yes with the emergency of Derek being in a coma lead to the rafting down a river but they never really reach their destination of the trade post, considering dereks condition this is understandable. Only part that wasn't really realistic was he never stopped for food with all that work all those hours he would have needed to eat to keep up his energy to do so. Like I said however this is still one of my favorite books

My 9 year old LOVED Hatchet so we bought him all the books by Gary Paulsen. He says they all seem to follow the same literary "formula" just in different settings - winter, an island, etc but he loves the outdoors and adventure books so he enjoys them, despite their slight predictability.

Great sequel to The Hatchet. Great book for a boy who or a girl who doesn't like to read very much. Exciting, boy has to survive in the wilderness by himself building fires, finding out which berries he can eat how to catch the fish how to skin the fish how to cook the fish just an excellent book I would recommend it to any boy or girl probably 9 years old or up but I would definitely suggest that they read the Hatchet first before they read the River

THE RIVER by Gary Paulsen.STORY BRIEF:This is the sequel to and should be read after "Hatchet." The River takes place a year later. In Hatchet, 13-year-old Brian survives for 54 days in the Canadian wilderness alone. The next summer the military hires Brian to do it again with one of them taking notes so they can train other people how to survive. Because it will help save lives, Brian agrees to do it. He and Derek fly to a different area in the Canadian wilderness. While there lightning strikes Derek causing a coma. The radio is also broken. Brian decides to build a raft to take them down the river to get help since Derek will die in a few days without water.REVIEWER'S OPINION:I loved Hatchet. This was enjoyable but not as good. I enjoy being with Brian as he thinks and acts in the survival environment. This book didn't have as many episodes or scenes with different animals and threats as the first book. In other words - not as many problems to solve and Brian didn't learn or grow as much as he did in the first book. So, not a lot happens here but I still liked it.The book is shorter than standard novels. The narrator Peter Coyote was excellent.OTHER BOOKS:The author wrote many books, but the Hatchet series consists of:5 stars. Hatchet (read first)5 stars. Brian's Winter (read second or third but I prefer second)3 stars. The River (read second or third)4 stars. Brian's Return3 stars. Brian's HuntDATA:Unabridged audiobook length: 2 hrs and 31 mins. Narrator: Peter Coyote. Swearing language: none. Sexual content: none. Setting: current day mostly the Canadian wilderness. Copyright: probably 1991. Genre: young adult adventure fiction.

Not quite as good as Hatchet, as the struggle to survive is contrived to begin with. Military experts want him to go thru a similar experience while being observed so they can figure out how he was able to survive. They need to know what about him helped him the first time. What he teaches them could help others who might be in similar situations. When things go wrong Brian has new problems to solve. He is responsible for another person who has been struck by lightening and is in a coma. There is less focus on how painful and consuming hunger can be. More focus on making critical decisions. How to get the injured man back to civilization, building a raft, learning how to navigate on the river. There are periods where Brian is exhausted because he is trying to get to the trading post as fast as possible. He falls asleep, dreams and hallucinates for portions of this excursion. Still a good story. We will look for the next one in this series.

My 12 year old really likes this series which is great because he is not a big fan of books. Listening to them on tape is great. We loved the first one and the second one is just o.k. Kind of short. Judging by other reviews we agree that the second one is not as good as the first, but it had really good moments. Definately will check out the next in the series because they are good enough to continue on. I wouldn't hesitate to get this and recommend finishing the series, especially for a boy who doesn't like to read, it is almost a miricle series. Peter Coyote (forgive the spelling) is a fabulous reader, he gets 5 stars!

This is another book about the survival of the main character. The book differs in the ways he had to save himself and the different tools he used to survive. Still, it was fun to read and my sons seemed to enjoy listening to the story.

I have always wanted to learn how to play Mah Jongg. I even bought a set, which is an American set, but the instructions that came with it were obviously written by someone whose first language was not English--most likely, Chinese. The instructions were virtually impossible to comprehend, so my Mah Jongg set sat for a couple of years. I finally found a group that plays Mah Jongg and they recommended this book. Up to that point I never realized there was a difference between Chinese and American Mah Jongg. The book is easy to read, well-layed out, and gives excellent explanations to understand the game. The game could appear very complex and possibly intimidating, but this book makes it all make sense. Of course, practice makes perfect! I highly recommend this book. For those that play computer Mah Jongg, be advised you are not playing anything like Mah Jongg. You are just learning tile recognition.

This is a comprehensive guide for players of beginning and intermediate National Mah Jongg League style of American Mah Jongg. The second half of the book includes a section on Chinese Mahjong. As an instructor of American Mah Jongg classes for community education, I have found this The Red Dragon and the West Wind to be an excellent reference book with its understandable explanations, illustrations, and appendices including a glossary and an expansive index. The copyright date on the book is ten years old, but the book has a current feel to it. The author's blog is also a useful supplement for bringing Mah Jongg rules and strategies up to date. i don't play American mahjong. I wanted a book with more strategy That said, this book is the best I've found so far about mahjong. It gave me tips on finding online games which I really like. I got a traditional game from a company called Nine Dragons. I play it when I'm not playing with my mahjong group

I wouldn't recommend the book as an introduction for someone who has absolutely no knowledge of Mah Jongg. Before I read it I used YouTube to get a sense of the game. Then I had a seasoned player show me the basics. Then I bought my own MahJong set and now I'm hooked! This book helped fill in the gaps for me, helped me understand the rules and strategies better. I find it useful as a reference tool. Also, the history section was very interesting.

I've had several books on how to play Mah Jongg, and this one is probably the best so far.

Nice to have the complex rules for Mah Jongg in one place. Sloper gives much more detail than the rule booklet published by the National Mah Jongg League.

I should have read the reviews. Misleading one description says 700 plus pages, another says 70. This book is the 70. Save your money. It's a summary far from a complete summary at that. For a deeper understanding check out Nsut Bty ny Asar Hotep.

Budge gives us a direct and literal translation of the "Book of Coming Forth By Day." I appreciate this edition in its organization with two layouts, one with and one without the corresponding hieroglyphics. Budge is a classic for a reason. It is helpful to read Ellis' translation side by side to get a more accesible spiritual viewpoint.

Ridiculous edition. The description for the KINDLE EDITION purports to be the full transcription by Budge, but there are only about 15 pages. Well, you get what you pay for in this case: ZILCH. But the description truly should be differentiated.

Not what it says. I was expecting a translated version of the book of the dead not the cliff notes. Very very disappointed

I don't care for this book. Was more like a reference book, than a good read. But it must hold a wealth of information.

This book is fascinating. It is what the ancient Egyptians believed and a lot of it we still believe in present day religion. They weren't too far from the truth. It doesn't tell you all of the beliefs but enough to make it interesting reading.

one can't fault budge for being a product of his time. compared to more modern writers he's a little stilted and stuffy, but i gather (not being an expert myself) that he's a very good translator and that this is a Very Important Work.but don't buy it for your kindle. there's no way to jump to the prayers you need, and it's simply too long to shuffle through every time. i'll probably never look at this again.khairetesuz

A reasonably well presented facsimile of the of the 1920 Edition.The half plate reproductions are just acceptable with a large lens.The original text is dated and of course highly questionable.It is a book that will join a number of other Budge originals and copies in my library.Reproduction books are often irritating in that they are often incomplete - My copies ofBudge; The Papyrus of Ani; A reproduction in facsimile, is missing all of the 37 essentialplates, Budge The Egyptian book of the Dead; The Papyrus of Ani Egyptian Text Transliterationand Translation missing once again the original 37 Plates, & Budge; Papyrus of Ani, The EgyptianBook of the Dead,is printed in some 'New Age' typo which seems intent on placing the contentsfirmly within a context of crystals & incense! None of these books sadly contain the printing historyof the publications, and this last one, once again has no title on the spine!

This book answered all of the questions I had. I have been mixing for about 5 years now, and I had gotten as far as I could get with the knowledge and trial & error that I have gained. The main part of the book I needed to fine tune was my EQ'ing. It gave me a basic template to go off of, and with simple tweaking to the recommendations in the book, my songs instantly sounded much better, every instrument stands out, and with has more power. The part about compression helps as well, although compressing is such a difficult beast to master properly, I still need more trial and error based off the recommendations in the book.It is very well written, as if an actual person is guiding you along, rather than a bunch of technical jargon which can be confusing. It is very easy to follow and understand. I have not tried the enclosed exercises on the DVD, instead referring to my own projects I am working on while using those as my exercises. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to add a bit more understanding and push to their mixes.

There are a lot of books out there with techniques and theories, and everyone says "there's no right or wrong way, and no hard and fast rules." That is a true statement, but for beginners, a guideline of where to start is still helpful. Owsinski tells you the same, but he also tells you where you might set your knobs to start, and how to determine which way to crank them. It's extremely hands-on and practical. The included DVD gives you some sessions to work with in multiple DAW formats so you really get a feel for how the things he tells you really affect the sounds you hear.It doesn't go too far and only beginner to early-intermediate mixers are going to get the maximum value out of it, but there are probably some tidbits and snippets of wisdom that more advanced engineers may pick up on.

Book is very generalized...not particularly informative.

I will start by saying I have several of Bobby Owsinski's books, and have learned alot from them. I ordered this book from his web site thinking that it would add to my knowledge. However, there was nothing on his web site that indicated you needed pro tools. (Which I do not have), I did call cuetomer service at Lynda and express this to them. They offered me a refund of my money. I ended up giving the book and disc to someone that has pro tools. So, if I were selling this book, and wanted future customers, I would put a program on the disc that would enable me to use all of the samples on the disc and perfom all of the lessons. Also I think that Bobby should put on his web site that you need pro tools to use this tutorial

The second book in Bobby Owsinski's new series "Audio Mixing Boot Camp" from Alfred Music Publishing surpassed all of my expectations. Bobby covers the science of mixing in a fresh and intuitive way. As expected, the book delves into the fundamentals of sliding faders and tuning knobs. Where this text really shines is Bobby Owsinski explains in non-technical language what is happening as you are adjusting your mix.The book covers music listening and analysis as it teaches you how to "visualize" your mix. The book also touches on basic arranging principles. Owsinski not only shows the reader how to identify the "groove" in a song but also how to create a "groove". The author also explains how to use sound "pads" to tie together the mix, and punch up the most important elements in your arrangement.Audio Mixing Boot Camp also talks about coloring your mix and giving it depth. Not only does Bobby Owsinski explain reverbs and delays but also the origins of plate, hall and chamber reverbs. The book also show the reader how to apply reverb to the mix without losing the definition of the individual instruments.I was especially happy to see the section covering choruses, flanges, phases and other modulation effects. Many musicians simply do not have a solid understanding of what their effects are actually doing. The age old mystery on the difference of tremolo and vibrato is finally reveled.The book is well written and a great text for the novice or pro. Once again it is accompanied with a dynamite DVD that is well produced and visually explains all of the concepts in the book. This is a must read for any musician with an interest in home recording or getting ready to start a recording project.
