If you watch lectures by Brian Cox, this is not that. If you studied Physics in college, do not expect a mind blowing break through. Light on words/equations, heavy on (great) pictures. All that said, it's a wonderful book if you go in with the right expectations. I'd still by it again! Better than fifty shades of non-sense or some vampire/wizard garbage.

I found this book to be the most accessible, poetically written survey of modern physics, astronomy, biology, etc. I think if I had read the book as a young man I might have stuck with the arduous journey to become a scientist. Books like "The Greatest Story Ever Told (Almost)" certainly go into their topics in more depth..but this book is not meant to be the substitute for a text on physics for non mathematicians. It is instead, a masterpiece meant to inspire deep awe and curiosity about the natural world. If the book does not inspire you and put new lenses on your world view, you probably need to go to bed and rest for a few days.

This book was an interesting read and the author explains in layman terms how the science of our universe works. It's nice that it's very recent, including research done just a year or two ago.

Good review of key physical concepts of the day. Sometimes a bit too technical explanations but Brian Cox knows how transmit his passion for pure science as a small child, and thus gets you to share that enthusiasm and curiosity

About the Author

Alan W. Watts, who held both a master’s degree in theology and a doctorate of divinity, is best remembered as an interpreter of Zen Buddhism in particular, and of Indian and Chinese philosophy in general. Standing apart, however, from sectarian membership, he has earned the reputation of being one of the most original and “unrutted” philosophers of the twentieth century. Watts was the author of some twenty books on the philosophy and psychology of religion that have been published in many languages throughout the world, including the bestselling The Way of Zen. An avid lecturer, Watts appeared regularly on the radio and hosted the popular television series, Eastern Wisdom and Modern Life, in the 1960s. He died in 1973.

To sum this book up: Anxiety happens, it's unavoidable, there's nothing you can do about it - except realize there's nothing you can do about it so just relax and don't worry about it.

I know that had Alan Watts been live, and had he seen the title of this review, he would have possible stomped his foot on the ground or even slapped me into my senses while saying: "BUT THAT'S NOT THE POINT."And I understand why he would say that. I understood (albeit not perfectly) the message that he is trying to pass on. Watts is the most Eastern Westerner I know. His philosophies, particularly in this book, can lead into a metaphysical web that could leave you stuck indefinitely. At this same time, if you peel back the philosophical layers, which he helps you do at times, you will notice that the message, at its core, is always simple. He is begging the reader not to eliminate the ego, but to come to a full realization, a hyper awareness of sorts, that there is NO ego - that the ego, or the "I," is simply a figment of imagination. There is no method to achieve this hyper-awareness, no guide, no set of instructions, but only this imperative: "Look!"I may be just a tad bit too simplistic to fully grasp the significance of this, but I believe that at times I caught a glimpse of the implications of Watt's message. To live perfectly in the moment, to understand that the experience and the "experiencer" are one in the same just as a wave is not part of the ocean, but is the ocean, all of it - I can begin to fathom how one would be able to shed so much pretense and predispositions. Or not, I don't know.My personal opinion is that there are gems in this book, but as it is with all things, anything in excess is harmful. This book sells Eastern thought in its entirety, and I believe that no, Alan Watt's does not have the answer to the meaning of life (which he would probably agree to me saying) and I don't think you'll find in this book all the answers to your questions. It is a refreshing read though, at least it was for me. I really had to break down my mind, my prejudices, my perceptions and realize that my reality is truly the product of my own mind - and that I can change that, if I want to.In any case, a worthy read, but definitely not a book if you're looking for "10 Ways to Reduce Anxiety." It is rather an exhortation to awareness.

This is a delightfully fresh and direct book from Watts. I have been reading him on and off for the past 35+ years and this seems to me to be something of a breakthrough for/from him, really expressing a very clear experience of being in the moment. It is easy to read (large print, simple words), but the meaning is deep and profound, and he says it all in a way that is both clearly simple and yet playfully fresh. And he does this without a lot of cultural baggage (East or West), so making it especially powerful and approachable for modern readers (yet also remarkable in that he wrote this in 1951).Over and over he points out what is real (what we all know), and yet indescribable;"What is true and positive is too real and too living to be described, and to try to describe it is like putting red paint on a red rose." (p.76)"Indeed, every experience is in this sense new, and at every moment in our lives we are in the midst of the new and unknown. At this point you receive the experience without resisting it or naming it, and the whole sense of conflict between "I" and the present reality vanishes." (p.94)"The meaning of freedom can never be grasped by the divided mind. If I feel separate from my experience, and from the world, freedom will seem to be the extent to which I can push the world around, and fate the extent to which the world pushes me around. But to the whole mind there is no contrast of "I" and the world. There is just one process acting, and it does everything that happens.... No one fates and no one is being fated." (p. 122)And the way he finishes the book is perhaps best of all;"Discovering this the mind becomes whole; the split between I and me, man and the world, the ideal and the real, comes to an end. Paranoia, the mind beside itself, becomes metanoia, the mind with itself and so free from itself. Free from clutching at themselves the hands can handle; free from looking at themselves the eyes can see; free from trying to understand itself thought can think. In such feeling, seeing, and thinking life requires no future to complete itself nor explanation to justify itself. In this moment it is finished." (p. 152)And he could just as easily have said, in this moment it begins.

Maybe the single best Alan Watts book. If you get this book, and really get "It", and you will know if you really got "It", your search for "It" will be finished. For you will have realized that you are "It". Always have been, always will be.

I particularly love Watts when he was still a deeply thinking Christian. But all his books are great, especially for those of us who are interested in the real life of the spirit, but don't want to 'be' a Buddhist, a Christian or join anything.

Alan Watts writes a wonderful view of life. Touching on the understandings of Christianity and Zen Buddhism and how they approach the understanding of human life. Of particular interest to me was the philosophy of I and Me. Thinking about thinking is so fun too..... A book that is wonderful to understand nature and appreciate adventure in life inspirational. Dance like no one is watching and enjoy this book a wonderful read dont think too hard on it and its a fun insighful beautiful book some real key thoughts on leading a beautiful life.

Not sure how one can give a bad review to a book. If you did not like a book, it just means YOU did not like a book, it doesn't mean a book is bad. So... I did not like this book, because I just do not like and do not agree with ideas that author expressed in this book. It was neither inspirational, not educational for me. That, unfortunately, was the worst book I read last year. I saw no benefits in reading it. But... I know people who would love it, therefore, it was unregretfully gifted to a co-workers. Although book is not expensive, you may want to read some extracts from it, if you can find, before purchasing

Being familiar with much of the area covered in the book, I really enjoyed the stories and how the situations were managed. I also found his part in the Claude Dallas investigation interesting. He was in the group that went out to search for the body of one of the murdered wardens after Dallas confessed where he had buried him. I had also been interested in visiting the Paradise Bar sometime, as the town there is a charming little place, but after being reminded that the owners had aided and abetted a murderer and poacher, I think I will pass. Perhaps it's under new ownership by now...perhaps not.Due to a shortage of personnel, officers patrol alone, summoning backup by radio if needed. This can entail long waits unless someone from another agency is in the vicinity. There's a lot of distance in Nevada, and you've got to keep yourself alive with smart decisions and tactics. You also have to do a lot of preliminary EMT care while waiting for them to come from the edge of nowhere.Want to be a police officer out west? Read this for career advice and info on what's expected of you. This book is also a good reminder about how many boogeymen are out roaming around the desert looking for prey, as well as lots of drunks. And watch out for roaming cattle and horses. Open range means it's your responsibility to avoid hitting them.

I bought this book on a whim, expecting to skim through it, stopping to read anything that looked especially interesting. I found myself intrigued by the well-written, matter-of-fact manner each aspect of the writer's career was presented, and actually read the entire book. There was no dramatic "guns blazing" action, but rather the experience of listening to the stories of a new acquaintance. Very glad I purchased it.

My husband was an NHP and worked with Steve. He really enjoyed the book because it told of the adventures of the Highway patrol in Nevada. You see those troopers have a very large patrolling area in the middle of no-where. They travel by themselves and sometimes lose radio contact. They risk there lives everyday just like any other police officer to keep the highways safe.

Nicely written, and interesting account of a veteran Nevada highway patrol officer. The book is a series of short stories, which is my preferred reading format. For the faint of heart, patrolling the highway involves occasional fatal accidents, and these are discussed. Hopefully this will serve as a wake-up call to people who continue to drive drunk, drive aggressively, or drive without a seatbelt. Overall this was a very good book.

This book had an interesting mix of stories from sad to serious. Learning about what a Nevada state troopers' job is like, their training, every day duties, accident investigation made this a good read. I liked how each chapter was a stand-alone story. Someone interested in being a state trooper, especially in Nevada, should read the book. I'm not going to worry about getting my fix-it ticket returned. 😊

I really like reading stories about real people and real life experiences! I thought this was well written, loved his stories and didn’t want to put it down and turn off the lights! I have often thought about writing about personal events and my experience as a hospice and then psychiatric nurse. There is so much we can learn from other people if we listen!

Collection of anecdotes from the working life of a state trooper. Some pleasant, some amusing, some thought-provoking, some haunting.The author is a decent writer and he certainly had an interesting career! The stories held my attention all the way through. This would be a great book to gift to someone considering a police career or who wants to understand a trooper's life.

This is a very entertaining book but at the same it gives a look into the other side of job often do thankless. I have met quite a few people in law enforcement and this seems to a dedicated officer. We need more like him. I wish a good life to him and thanks to him and all. Police officers. I. Hope yourealize how much most people appreciate you.

My wife's reaction when I started reading this book pretty much sums it up: "You're reading ANOTHER Ramones book?"Like a lot of fans, I've read em all- Johnny Ramone's book, Dee Dee's, Mickey Leigh's, Monte Melnick's, and several other general bio books of the band. That on top of watching the End of Century and Raw documentary DVDs, left me wondering what other stories could be left.Well, this book proves that there are plenty more great stories about the Ramones, and Marky Ramone's got em. All the anecdotes in this book are either totally new to me, or offer new details on well-told tales. For example, Marky's account of the Phil Spector sessions adds a whole different perspective from any other version.In short, full of stuff you probably haven't read before, even if you're a hardcore Ramones fan.

I've been a fan of the Ramones for many years but have never read much about them or delved into their history. "Punk Rock Blitzkrieg" offers a unique view from the drummer's seat: the personalities, the neuroses, the endless touring, and not least, the addictions. Marky was not an original Ramone. He cut his teeth in other influential bands of the time and was asked to join when Tommy stepped back in 1978. Excepting a hiatus to deal with his own alcohol addiction he remained with the band until the end and is today the sole survivor of the primary line-up.By reading "Blitzkrieg" I learned more about being in a punk band and how the music is played than I thought I would. The book offers a musician's view, explaining Johnny's guitar style, how Dee Dee approached the base, and how these techniques were critical to the sound.The book is clearly written by a guy from Brooklyn. It has attitude, it has chutzpah. It sometimes comes off as a string of somewhat unrelated memorable incidents, without the continuity one comes to expect from an autobiography. But read with an eye on who the author is, and taken at face value, it's an entertaining and good read. I came away feeling like I knew more about the Ramones, and certainly about who Marky is. And he's quite a guy. I'd love to buy him a seltzer some time!

This is an interesting read, but I suspect some of the stories needed to be fact checked. For example: the author places the famous "How nice of you to take care of these retarded boys" story at a Binghamton, NY Cracker Barrel Resturant in 1982. Binghamton did not get a Cracker Barrel until 1999. Monte Melnick, said in a New York Times article that this event took place in Texas. The reader also has to take the author's personal bias into account. He's the only Ramone who thought Phil Spector was a great guy. This is probably due to the two being drinking buddies. Considering that Spector went to jail for murder after the book was published negates the "great guy" claim. Where the book earns the author points is in the story of his recovery from alcohol abuse. That section is excellent. The book's narrative structure is also excellent for this type of memior. Just realize that there is a chance that not every story you read here will be 100% accurate. But that is the same with all autobiography.

Marky is a true great drummer. He's played rock, metal, jazz and,of course, punk with the genre's pioneer group the Ramones.What I love about this book is It's not a real dirty, shocking tell all book. He touches on things here and there about personal things and his experiences with members of the Ramones, but the book emphasizes on the music.He talks about auditions, tours, the recording process, types of drums he uses and how he discovered and embraced music: that's what a true music lover myself wants to read about-not constant pages of bashing fellow band mates and getting so graphic about what they did under the influence of substances, it literally grosses you out. aboutIt gives a well balanced depiction of the life and times of Marky. He man is free of ego. He's mainly humble but makes it clear from experience he knows what he's doing and does not like compromising his integrity as an artist.If you want a great read by a drummer, This is an awesome book to get!

I think that while this book has great concepts and exercises in it, the format that these are presented is a bit bulksome and very difficult to read. His method of numbering is horrible. He has exercises (unnumbered), problems (numbered), theorems (numbered) and statements (numbered in a different format than the theorems). Finding anything in the book is a nightmare. Referring to a concept in the book usually requires something like "Go to the 45th page and then find the 3rd exercise from the bottom (exercises have no number remember). There is a line above that with the statement that you need." The whole book could use a major format overhaul. Then it would be a 5 star book.

I'd give this 5 stars if all the printing mistakes were eliminated (things like missing square root signs). I guess they're still trying to get the kinks out of the kindle electronic format. I assume these problems are not there in the regular printed edition, but I don't know.The material itself is great... very thorough. Perfect for some who has taken an introductory linear algebra course already. Plenty of exercises.

This book has a very good introductory material on matrices and related topics like eigenvalues, canonical forms and location of eigenvalues etc.. It starts from basics like definitions, types of matrices etc.. and goes on to touch some advanced topics as well. A very good text.

This book explained a lot of myth intrinsically using linear algebra really clearly, but sound really complicated when reading literature in the applied fields.But, I don't know whether it is the nature of the subjects or a lack of organization, you need to go back and forth through all the book several times to the really understand the subject and what the excises are looking for.
