First off, I want to say that Fr. Schall is one of my favorite living priests today. He is sometimes nicknamed the "Old-Skool Jesuit". While an interesting name, he is merely a faithful and humble priest trained in the Ignatian spiritual fashion. I want to publicly thank him for his ministry as well.This is a book on sin and much that relates to it. It is a discourse that involves some of the wisdom of Plato, Aristotle, Nietzsche, Chesterton, Lewis, Benedict XVI, and Pope Francis. It is filled with immense wisdom, and there were a few nuggets that really knocked me over the head, points I had not even realized before, but were staring me right in the face the whole time. The appendix in this book, 15 lies, is worth the price of this book alone. It is essentially a syllabus of errors for our country. If every single Catholic took those lies to heart, we would immediately see how western society is crumbling and we Catholics could unite to be the force for change in the world, in a very intentional and effective way.The only thing keeping me from 5 stars is the layout of the book. Fr. Schall is basically borrowing from his many blog posts and making each post a chapter. While I understand that Fr. Schall has written so much on his blog posts, and how it saves much time to compile it like this, I really would have preferred a more intentional narrative work with his blog posts as citations. I get it though, that takes more time. Still, what is in this book is a treasure.

An updated collection of essays written by Fr. Schall. Easy reading, yet though-provoking. This is not a list of sins, nor is it a book about dos and don'ts. It's food for thought about sin, mercy and forgiveness. I had thought about highlighting the notable pearls of wisdom in this book, but decided against it -- the whole book would be yellow.

It's a series of essays, but good. When things go seriously south, it helps in understanding why remorse, repentance, and restorative justice matter.

This is a great book. Easy to read but rich in traditional Thomistic learning.

The last third of the book measures up to the prominence deserved by so wonderful a title as A Line Through the Human Heart. This book is lacking in the thorough scholarship usually contained in Msgr. Schall's other writings, especially his outstanding work THE ORDER OF THINGS.

Beautiful.

There is alot of useful information and recipes are divided by country and/or region. She might also have put a recipe in a different country under a different name because many country's have simular recipes. So instead of putting a simular recipe for each country she lists one in the country it came from then discusses the various ways its done in the various regions. Many recipes will not be able to be done in the USA because many ingredients are not available, such as lamb brains. But I have done a couple of recipes and they are good. I also have no way of knowing if they are authentic but I get the impression that they must be close. All in all I'm looking forward to trying more recipes as I'm trying to eat healthier. So to sum it up I'm happy I bought the book and if you are interested in middle eastern cuisine then I think you would find this book of value.

I found this cookbook at a small middle eastern store in the Dominican Republic and immediately knew that I had to buy it. It's a great cookbook, with a wide diversity of recipies, and also provies cultural context for each cuisine represented. Each country is given it's own chapter, with a brief historical overview, cultural information, including eating style, followed by recipies.Although a few recipies aren't for the faint of heart (lamb's brains being a key ingredient), the majority are delicious and range from the easy to prepare to requiring a fair degree of skill. However, all recipies are clearly laid out and well explained. There could be more photos, but those that exist are beautifully laid out and capture the composition of the dishes.I'd highly recommend this book for almost any level of cook. It would also be a lovely addition if you just enjoy learning about other cultures.

I highly recommend . Although I am more of a visual learner and I was hoping that this book would be a little more graphic. Several of the recipes have no picture, so you will have to look the names up online to know if it looks like something you’d wanna eat before trying to cook it.

I must admit that I have bought this book because I have never, before this book, found any other book in English that has included Gulf cuisine. Most books that boast Middle Easter cuisine are mostly Lavantian (i.e. Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Palestine), Iranian, or Mediterranean! But never an accurate attempt to explore Arabic Gulf food!Upon receiving the book, I immediately went to the Gulf section and I have to say that I am impressed with how well the author has researched the region and cuisine! Given that I live here, I know and appreciate how difficult it is to get a hold of these recipes. Therefore, despite some flaws in some of the recipes, I take my hat off to the author and for her extremely wide spectrum of ME dishes! Just to prove my point, even my mom who knows all these recipes was surprised at how the author got her hands on some many Gulf recipes and she got most of them right! There you have it!!!The Arabs in the Gulf still to this very day have a very deep and complex understanding of spices and I can totally appreciate some reviewers comments where they complain that it is hard to source some spices and ingredients! I completely understand that and that is why I think some of the recipes have somewhat been watered down for the Western reader... for example, you will notice that there is a recipe for mixed spice powder. In the book the recipe calls for about 7 or 8 spice ingredients, actually the mix used in the Gulf calls for a minimum of 12 different spices! Some of the spices are hard to come by over here... let alone in the West! There are some other inaccuracies which I cannot recall off the top of my head but they really do not take away greatly from the wide spectrum of the book!!!Take it from a Middle Easterner, this books has all the goodies from the Gulf! Anyone who wishes to cook authentic ME recipes, this book is got what it takes!

My knowledge of Middle East food is limited to the occasional Greek restaurant and a few falafel stands. Nevertheless, I found the flavors to be authentic and totally different from my usual Western, American, European, haute cuisine, Christian flavors. I really liked the flavors and recipes in this book. I enjoy making recipes from this cookbook; it is educational, and always good food. It has many interesting recipes, such as: curing fresh olives, raw lamb tartare, baba ghannouj, rose water syrup, and how to bake a whole lamb.All of the recipes that use rice, suspiciously, use the same cooking method regardless of country, something I am sure is not correct. Due to ethnic and religious reasons, there are no recipes for beef or pork, but plenty that use poultry, seafood, and especially lamb. The author often lists in recipes that rightfully use lamb that beef is an acceptable substitute, but I am rather suspicious of this advice.The recipes are simple, honest cooking of the street vendors and the home. There are no complicated procedures or sophisticated techniques that are born out of European haute cuisine. This book is brimming with marvelous design, from the containers themselves to the lovely colors and layouts of each page.The plant palette pages are beautiful and include photographs and descriptions of each plant and alternate suggestions.The book has a great deal of practical information as well as creative container ideas, two of my favorites are 'A Mini Meadow' and 'Living Perfume'.With 42 inspiring combinations to choose from, you are sure to find several (if not all!) that are suitable for your location and garden style.

I thought there would be more information about mixing colors using flowers. I did not find the combinations that interesting or any I would want to use. I was looking more for use of flowers (annuals) for that pop of color always needed on porches, window boxes, patios, etc.However, it does give good points as to where to use the perennials, explanation of each plant used and close up picture, what size container was used to achieve the look; gives dimensions.If you looking for guidance on Plant ( not Flower) containers, this is your book.

I didn't find the pictures of the container gardens very appealing. Maybe they are just not my cup of tea. The book lists the specific plants used, but also gives suggestions for alternate plants, which is good because it is difficult to find exact varieties. However, I found the book not worth keeping.

I checked this book out from the library and then decided I needed to buy my own copy! Great pictures and ideas for pulling together beautiful container ideas. So many different styles and each one is described in detail. I can't wait to try some this spring.

I really liked this product! It was just what I wanted. The characters are large, and its not very difficult to color, and I love it! The paper itself it high qualiy too!

I liked it, had images repeated from their other 2 books I purchased but I dont mind, if I mess up on the otgers I have a chance to fix it on this one. It looks like most of their images are taken from the Dokkan Battle mobile DBZ game (I would know, I've been playing it close to 4 years now) but the images, like their other two books I've reviewed, are very good and high quality. Very good company.

My son loves it.

My father brough this book from Japan in the 1950's for my sisters and me. I wanted to give a new copy to my granddaughter. Although clearly a reprint, it looks just the same, and I can't wait to share the stories again!

I own 1959 version. The 2008 version is split into two books. The Kintaro’s Adventures book does not include “The Magic Spring” and “Mountian-Lucky and Sea-Lucky”. Otherwise I would have given it a five. Stories and pictures are great.

This book is a great collection of classical folk stories from Japan for children. I use it in my classroom - teaching Japanese to ages 5 through to 12. The wording is easy to understand and the coloured illustraions are great. There are many versions of these stories around but this collection makes them very accessible to the youngest children. Froma set of 4 books - have them all - they are all great teaching resources.

Great gift.

This is one of my favorite books from childhood and my children in turn have enjoyed it. It includes the famous "Kintaro's Adventures" as well as "The Princess and the Herdboy" from which the Star festival (Tanabata) of Japan originates. The other four stories are just plain fun. Along with the other Tuttle Company books of Japanese children's stories, this would be a great addition to upper elementary classrooms.

Max (age 6) says: I recommend this book. The turtle story was my favorite because, in the end, the townspeople beat the lazy brother who beat the singing turtle. I would give the Kintaro story two and a half stars.

Very thrilled to be able to get this book. Had this as a kid and have wanted to buy it for my kids.
