In French areas (roughly Vaud, Geneva, Jura, Neuchâtel, and western parts of Fribourg and Valais) the cuisine is clearly Gallic, and wine stews, organ meats, and subtle sausages appear alongside standard cuisine bourgeoise: thick, rare beef entrecôte with a choice of rich sauces and truite meunière (trout dredged in flour and sizzled in butter). In the Ticino, the Italian canton, Italian cuisine appears virtually unscathed, particularly the Alpine-forest specialties of Piedmont and Lombardy (risotto, gnocchi, polenta, porcini mushrooms). The German cantons serve more pork than their neighbors and favor another standard dish that represents Switzerland though it vanishes in French-speaking or Italian-speaking areas: Rösti, a broad patty of hashbrown potatoes crisped in a skillet and often flavored with bacon, herbs, or cheese, is as prevalent in the German regions as fondue is in the French. Beyond the obvious cultural differences, Swiss cuisine is also influenced by the terrain: Mountain farmers have traditionally subsisted on such basic foods as raclette (cheese melted over broiled potatoes and garnished with pickled vegetables), while cities nurtured wealthy burghers and noblemen with the cream of the crops of outlying lands -- milkfed veal, fruits from low-lying orchards. Though fondue, Rösti, and veal are likely to be on any resort's menu these days, traces of these influences can still be found almost everywhere.HikingWhen the snow melts and the mountain streams start to flow, Switzerland takes to the hills. That the Swiss Alps are the ultimate in hiking is no secret: On a sunny day in high season in the more popular vacation areas, footpaths can be almost as crowded as a line for World Series tickets. On narrow trails, hikers walk in single file, and the more aggressive pass on the left as if on the Autobahns of Germany. However, there is an almost infinite quantity of quiet, isolated routes to be explored; if you prefer to hike in peace, head for one of the less inhabited Alpine valleys -- in the Valais or Graubünden there are several -- and strike out on your own. Each of the regional tourist departments publishes suggested hiking itineraries, and major map publishers distribute excellent topographical maps of wilderness trails. In the German-speaking region especially, hiking is a deeply rooted tradition, and people of all ages and in all physical conditions head for well-beaten paths in jeans as often as knickers, woolen stockings, rucksacks, and hiking boots.Regional CelebrationsBasel's extravagant pre-Lenten observance of Fasnacht (Carnival) -- in which up to 20,000 costumed revelers fill the streets with the sounds of fifes and drums -- is only one of the hundreds of festivals that the Swiss celebrate during the year. Lesser-known festivals range from the frivolous -- in the Schlitteda Engiadinaisa, young unmarried men and women ride decorated sleighs through the villages of the Engadine -- to the symbolic -- in the Landsgemeinde, the citizens of Appenzell pay homage to their country's democratic tradition by conducting a vote by public show of hands. ShoppingSwiss Army knives, Swiss watches, Swiss chocolate -- what could be more...Swiss? Though you won't find many bargains in Switzerland anytime soon, you will find some uniquely Swiss treasures. Some of the best souvenirs of this pragmatic country are typically practical, such as watches, clocks, and Swiss Army knives. I Am Not a Tractor is an incredibly important and enjoyable read. While many of us are conscious about the food we are buying, little has been said about the process of harvesting the vegetables and fruits. The organic label covers the process and chemicals of growing, but there is no similar label that guarantees that the food you are eating was picked by people making a living wage and working in safe conditions. This revealing story starts by exposing the growers enslaving people to pick tomatoes in Florida in the immediate past, and the steps that they took to maintain their slave labor. The twist (given away in the title) is that the workers developed a coalition and took huge steps to creating a living wage and safe working conditions by creative partnerships with buyers, distributors and ultimately the owners of the farms themselves. The template revealed by this story could easily be applied to other areas and certainly raises signifiant questions about how to identify and support businesses that pay living wages and safe working conditions. The author tells the tale in a way that bridges an entertaining story with academic rigor. The story of how farm laborers, those at the very bottom of the food production chain, began to organize themselves to achieve a degree of fairness in pay and benefits. Going back 20 to 25 years ago, those who picked the tomatoes for huge farms in Florida, were working in virtual peonage, and in some cases without clean water or bathroom facilities during long days in the fields. The book details how a small group formed a small coalition to begin to fight for basic rights. First working to get some concessions from the farm owners and wholesale corporations. Eventually finding that they must target the large fast food chains and eventually the major grocery store chains, in order to make headway in pursuit of fair food standards. The amazing part is this small coalition grew over time and eventually achieved their goals.A very interesting and informative read, for anyone interested in the back story of how our food finally gets to the restaurants and grocery stores, and the fight to ensure fairness to those at the very bottom of the chain.

As a full-time farmer myself, this book gave me hope. Yes, I've read plenty of stories that rail against the abuses of modern agriculture. But here is an inspiring, genuine success story--people standing up for themselves and making a positive change--as well as a path to a national solution. A hand-signed edition, this book came in gently used shape at a reasonable price. It's a fun look at the a career of fashion Jewelry maker (using paste rather than real jewels, but still bought up by the likes of Jackie O and others of her ilk) Kenneth Jay Lane, whose fab fakes could cost more than many of the Real Thing, due to his opulent style of craftsmanship and attention to detail. A fun read and a nice book for conversation.

The book is the perfect collection of information and display of some of his fine pieces. A wonderful coffee table book to pick up and peruse after you have read it from front to back. Nice to own a book about one of the most majestic jewelry minds of our time!

I am very happy with what the book is. I have not read the whole book but only glanced through. It was a terrific price for a pristine used book. It even is signed on a bookplate inside.

I really like many of the designs that Kenneth J. Lane has produced over the years and loved having a reference book of all his different styles and periods. The prose is of a chatty style that I usually am not too fond of but Mr. Lane is so upbeat and aware of the good fortune that has blessed him that you can't help but like him. The photography is wonderful and it is fun to see photos of celebrities wearing his jewels. The book could have been stronger if it has an addendix of technical information about the creation of costume jewelry or had a reference as to current pricing of some of Mr. Lane's vintage pieces. But I had many a fun evening looking and reading and will definately keep this book available for several more readings.

More of a biography of the hows and the whens of Kenneth Jay Lane and his jewelry empire. Was hoping for more of a Jewelry Reference book which this is definitely not. Feel I wasted the money I could have used for a more in depth book about KJL designs and time periods.

I first saw this book in a gorgeous "tabletop" store in Bellevue, WA where I purchased some fabulous Kenneth Lane napkin rings -- bejeweled zebras. I really bought the book for the cover picture as immediately upon seeing it I determined I was going to make such a wreath for myself. I've been accumulating the glitziest pins and earrings I could find -- ON SALE and not Kenneth Lane ($)-- for several years and I think I have just about enough to assemble it -- mine will be on either black or dark red velvet. I love jewelry, real and costume, and Kenneth Lane's "costume" is gorgeous!

This was definitely one thrill of a sequel. Not only do we get more of the savage games, determined survivors, and wild vampires, but werewolves storm the cast as well.V Games: Fresh from the Grave is definitely a bloody thriller of a sequel and I can't wait to read the last book in the V Games trilogy (although there are more books that will dive into the lives of other characters that will continue the series). If you're on the hunt for a story teeming with the supernatural but prefer one high on the stakes with a dash of romance to keep 'em there then definitely look into this series because so far it's been one danger of a ride.

This is the second book in this series and Selena goes back to the island to rescue Varick from the twisted Helsings, who plan to torture Varick as punishment for helping Selena escape the island. Unfortunately, Selena ends up competing in a second round of games on the Isle of Lidelse. Winning the first time was difficult, but twice is next to impossible. This book is just as fast-paced, intense and possibly more gruesome than the first. However, I found that I compelled to finish it quickly to find out how it ends. This one was definitely another nail biter!

No Worries, I was engaged right back into the continuing Story of Selena and Varick.The storyline includes history of both that drew them more clearly. Introduction to werewolves.And the new improved Helsing V Games with larger number of contestants and audience. An amphitheater that "stank of bank notes and fresh blood". Selena finds herself and her allies back in the game. Shish, this is intense and even when the action slows Ms. Peckham builds just enough new threats to let readers know there is more danger ahead. Selena and Varrick together and uh a visitor. to be continued. AAAhhhhhh!

If you thought V-Games 1 was brutal, you've seen nothing yet. Seleena and Varek arein for the challenge of their lives. V - Games, Fresh from the grave takes off from the first and never slows pace untill the breathless end. Be warned, it ends on a cliffhanger. I'm so ready for #3. I recieved a complimentary copy of this book and willingly give my honest review.

This book brings you back to the games which is held in a new arena with a lot more new and unique things for the girls. Varrick has been sent to the games instead of living with the Helsings. Werewolves are introduced as well as an old friend from Varrick’s past.

I would definitely recommend this book. There's times when it's slow, but it's so worth it. It's the second book and follows immediately after the first one. It's definitely something you should read if you like vampires/girl power/evil villain/werewolves.

Amazing read! Could not put the book down. This series deserves 5 stars... I love the story line and all the characters. Buy it read it and you will not regret it.

I love the V Games book2 and i can't wait to read the 3rd book. I love all everything about this book and the characters in the book.

About the Author

St. Robert Bellarmine was born Roberto Bellarmino in 1542 at Montepulciano, Italy. A Jesuit Cardinal and Doctor of the Church, he was born of noble patronage and became a Roman novice in 1560 though the influence of his mother. After his ordination, he rapidly gained popularity as a professor and for his preaching, which drew in both Catholics and Protestants. He was also significantly active in the Counter-Reformation, and composed several works of literature, including The Mind\'s Ascent to God, The Art of Dying Well, The Seven Words on the Cross, and Hell and Its Torments. St. Bellarmine died on the seventeenth of September, 1621, at Rome, and was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1930.

Robert Bellarmine (1542-1621) was an Italian Jesuit and a Cardinal of the Catholic Church, as well as one of the most important figures in the Counter-Reformation. This booklet was one of five sermons on the “Four Last Things” (Death, Judgment, Hell, and Heaven) delivered at Louvain University in 1574, when Bellarmine was only 32 years old.He states early in the sermon, “all Christians have been persuaded that the Almighty and most Excellent God has decreed by an irrevocable sentence that he who departs this life guilty of having violated God’s law is bound over as a convict to eternal chains and is tortured without end by unspeakable torments. Nevertheless, we see daily that many people, under no compulsion… offend God with their own initiative, free will and pleasure of mind… What shall we say is the cause of this? … there seem to me to be three principal causes of this: lack of consideration, ignorance and self-love…” (Pg. 2-3)He argues, “It we truly understood the gravity of the fault, we would scarcely entertain any doubt as to the bitterness of the penalty… how great is the gravity of sin?... it is so immense that our minds can in no way grasp it… For if it be fitting to measure the magnitude of an offense by the dignity and nobility of him who is offended, then certainly sin, which wound an infinite dignity and nobility, will be an immense and infinite evil.” (Pg. 4)He observes, “What shall we say about the damned angels? Was not the Prince of Devils once the Prince of Angels?... If, therefore, the greatest, wisest and most eminent of all the angels was thrust out of Heaven for a single sin and hurled into the Abyss, how comes it that we, who cling to the slime of innumerable sins, flatter ourselves concerning the benevolence and kindness of God?” (Pg. 9-10)He points out, “I hear someone raising his voice in objection and saying: ‘Has anyone ever come back from Hell to affirm that these things are true?’ O foolish question!... if some people were to come back from Hell, all could hope that they will someday do likewise. Since, then, no one ever does return, it is a form of proof that Hell is so deep a pit that no one can rise out of it.” (Pg. 11)He explains, “the eyes of the damned shall never again perceive any beautiful sight, nor their ears any sweet singing, nor their sense of taste any joyful savor, nor their sense of touch any gentle thing. For once a person has been excluded from the consortium of God, he is plunged once and for all into the ocean of all woes and calamities without any hope of escape.” (Pg 22) Later, he adds, “there shall arise in the very wills of sinners an implacable hatred against God… They shall have no further hope of recovering salvation. They shall know of a certainty that never can they return to the grace of God, that never shall their tortures be ended or mitigated… they shall rage like rabid dogs, and never shall they cease from barkings, blasphemies and contumely… They shall curse God because He is not continuously killing them, yet never allowing them to die.” (Pg. 27)He states, “in Hell the most ferocious pain shall at one and the same time be borne in the breast, the kidneys and in every joint, never center, marrow, sense and faculty of the body.” (Pg. 30) He notes, “If here in our world devils can claim for themselves such power over us… what, I ask you, shall they do in their own territory, where they fear neither exorcisms, nor holy water, nor the merits and prayers of the saints?” (Pg. 32)He adds, “what a cross shall the eyes of the damned suffer when they see their wives, parents and children in the same torments!... There, with weighty grief, shall children see their parents and parents their children, husbands their wives and wives their husbands… bearing them company in the tortures of Hell!” (Pg. 33)He concludes, “if the mere thought of this eternity terrifies us, what shall it be not to contemplate, but actually to dwell amid eternal punishments? To be tortured without end is a thing so horrendous that if it feel to the lot of but one of the children of Adam to be struck with such a punishment, we would all have reason to fear and tremble… If we do not believe these things, where is our faith?” (Pg. 45)Not exactly “light summer reading,” this booklet is a frank and clear presentation of Bellarmine’s understanding of eternal torment.

I read this pamphlet a couple years ago and then read it again.- Negatives?This pamphlet is a sermon: my regret is that more of Bellarmine's sermons are not available in English.- Final ThoughtsThe pamphlet What Will Hell Be Like? is also good. I strongly recommend End of the Present World and the Mysteries of the Future Life.

An excellent tool for defeating the common arguments against the existence of Hell. St. Robert Bellarmine was a brilliant man. The sermon is a little longer than one might expect, but I was able to read it in a little less than an hour, with full comprehension. I highly recommend this work. It is so good that I even gave a copy to one of my professors.

The pamphlet Hell and its Torments is an excellent sermon on hell delivered by St. Robert Bellarmine (a Doctor of the Church) at Louvain University in the late sixteenth century as part of a series on the Four Last Things.Some, Bellarmine says, seemingly anticipating and refuting the modern position of Hans ur von Balthasar, “had thought that all men, whether Christian, Jew, or pagan, are to be saved at the Last Judgment, either through their own merits or the advocacy and suffrage of others. … What else but self-love gave all these people such a misdirected sense of compassion and caused them to take such a paltry view of the tortures of Hell?”Bellarmine describes the penalties of unrepentant mortal sin – loss of beatitude and torture and torment. The “heavier” penalty is the loss of happiness, the Highest Good. The lesser is the torture, both of the body and the soul. His treatment of the torments of hell is not as graphic as that of Dante in the Inferno. The damned will suffer in the soul in thought, memory, intelligence, and will. “[T]he sorrow which arises from the loss of the highest good, and which torments the faculties of the inner soul, is mighty and indescribable.”Bellarmine’s treatment of the bodily punishments is the most graphic portion of the sermon, but like the other parts, it is designed to bring the sinner to repentance and to instill a desire to avoid hell. “My dear people, it would assuredly be an excellent thing if we could comprehend but a little the eternity of punishment. For this thought alone would like a bridle restrain all our lusts and moderate our lives, so that we would all seem to be not only Christians, but most holy monks and anchorites!”

Summary: Peter Lombard presents a confused understanding of Augustine’s view of creation and anthropology modified to a semi-Pelagian to almost Pelagian theology either purposely or through ignorance of Augustine’s authentic works.According to Peter, “For there is in the rational soul a natural will, by which it naturally wills what is good, although weakly and feebly, unless grace assists. . .” (2.24.1.3, pg. 109). This free will is described as such “because, without compulsion or necessity, it is able to desire or elect what it has decreed by reason” (2.25.4.2, pg. 118). “And yet we do not deny that there are many good things which are done by man through free choice before this grace and apart from grace” (2.26.7.2, pg. 130).And then this lovely quote which he attributes to Jerome, but since the Renaissance is now recognized as Pelagius:Jerome teaches in his Explanation of the Catholic Faith to Pope Damascus, where he strikes at the errors of Jovinian, Manichaeus, and Pelagius, saying: “We acknowledge that choice is free so as to say that we are always in need of God’s aid; and that both those are in error who say with Manichaeus that man cannot avoid sin, and those who assert with Jovinian that man cannot sin. Each of them takes away freedom of choice. But we say that man is always able to sin and not to sin, so that we confess ourselves to be ever free in our choice. This is the faith which we learned in the Catholic Church and which we have always held.”It’s not clear to me that Peter Lombard is unaware that he is quoting Pelagius to support conclusions that are both non-Augustinian and unbiblical. (This will be discussed more in the review on book 3 and 4.) At the same time “among the works attributed to Augustine” were sermons, letters, and writings that were not authentically Augustinian in authorship or doctrine, and so it is possible that he’s struggling to harmonize self-contradictory teachings within what he understands is Augustine’s canon. This is occurs while he attempts to harmonize the contradictory teaching of Ambrose, Augustine, Jerome, Bede, and so forth. There is even an effort to harmonize these diverse teachings with the Bible.He teaches along with others before him that the “pollution which the flesh contracts in its conception from the burning of the parents’ joining and their lustful concupiscence” (2.32.6.2, pg. 156). In other words, we are born with a sin nature or original sin, because our parents or one of our parents enjoyed conceiving us. While Augustine in his authentic works lays out the framework for this sort of doctrine, the most blatant support comes from Augustine-like quotes from Fulgentius (c. 462-527).Peter Lombard also rejects the possibility that at conception both physical and spiritual elements of parents are passed to the child. The technical term for this is traducianism: Peter rather firmly states, “But the Catholic faith utterly rejects this and condemns it as opposed to truth since, as we said above, that faith admits that flesh alone, and not souls, is transmitted. And so it is not according to the flesh, that original sin is derived from parents” (2.31.3.1, pg. 154). Augustine was certainly more open to the possibility than this quote allows and traducianism was held by other church fathers including Tertullian.Oddly enough he provides an explanation of the pop-culture reference to an angel on one shoulder and a demon on the other: apparently this was first taught by Origen, then by Gregory of Nyssa, and popularized for posterity by Lombard (2.11.1.2, pg. 46).He may have originated the now hoary-headed sermon illustration:Why woman was formed from the man’s side and not from some other part of his body. But although woman was made from man for these reasons, nevertheless she was formed not from must any part of his body, but from his side, so that it should be shown that she was created for the partnership of love, lest, if perhaps she had been made from his head, she should be perceived as set over man in domination; or if from his feet, as if subject to him in servitude. Therefore since she was made neither to dominate, nor to serve man, but as his partner, she had to be produced neither from his head, nor from his feet, but from his side, so that he would know that she was to be placed beside himself whom he had learned had been taken from his side (2.28.2; pg. 77).Benefits/Detriments: Book 2 exposes what happens when a possibly earnest attempt is made to harmonize the Bible, current church practice, and the diverse teaching of the church fathers. It’s rather a mishmash and at points incoherent.
