I've been playing 40k on and off for 10 years. I never bought a rule book, but seeing how my last edition was 5th, I thought I'd finally buy the rulebook (mostly because I can afford it now). The only rules are the 15 page "how to play" section that's also a free PDF on their website. You pay $55 for 300 pages of Lore and pictures.If you're buying this thinking you need this to play, save $50 and go to their website and download the same 15 pages of rules for free.
The book is full of junk. Like always, the important stuff is in the back, and the new 8th edition rules are light. This several hundred page book can be summarised in one chapter.
The rules are easily obtainable elsewhere cheap or even free. This is a huge book off fluff, but not even good fluff. It just touches on different points of the 40k mythos but nothing substantial or satisfying. And to top it all off, YOU CAN'T PLAY THE GAME WITH THIS RULEBOOK UNLESS YOU GO BUY ARMY/FACTION BOOKS.
While technically a rule book. Most of the book is pictures of armies and fluff. Less then half is rules and battle set ups. Between the cost of armies and these never-ending books of fluff I'm starting to feel fleeced. Still enjoy the game though.
