I think this book has gotten a bit of an unfair bad rap because of some of the reviews. I almost didn't buy it because of them.True, the book spends the first half dozen pages or so trying to do a "hard sell" on the concept of clicker training. That is boring and completely unnecessary because we're already reading the book (duh), so it is just wasted space. But the meat of the book is good.Within the first 20 pages of the book, she very carefully and precisely teaches you a step-by-step approach to teaching a cat the "targeting" behavior through clicker training, which is the first thing most trainers teach. She goes really slowly step-by-step for everything from when to do it, how to do it, what treats to use to reward your cat, how often to do it etc. Then, since training additional things is only a variation of that training, she summarizes what is necessary to teach additional things. This is a common tactic for training books. Give the theory, give one very complete step-by-step example, and rely on the readers ability to generalize that to other situations. So I really don't understand the criticism that she only tells anecdotes about her cats, and how the book is useless etc. I think for such people, most books would be useless, since this is a very common approach to learning. Anyone with a high school level reading level ought to be able to comprehend this book and attempt to put the lessons into practice. To be fair, I can't evaluate how successful these methods are yet since I have just read the book and haven't put them into practice, but after reading the book I feel like I understand the concept and the necessary steps to perform, and have confidence that I can attempt to train my cats in these behaviors. It seems pretty straight forward and I look forward to spending many hours in this most worthy pursuit.

Very short book... you can get all the information from online sources. I was also disappointed with how vague it was in terms of instruction. It would have been nice to see a day-by-day training list for a typical cat. Instead, the book was peppered with anecdotes about how such-and-such cat did some amazing thing after only the first day... Not really helpful, since that is not my cat and I bought this book as a step-by-step manual, not to read random stories. I also wanted more instruction on how to increase difficulty of tasks, how to know if your cat is ready to move to more difficulty, and specifics on treats. Should we always use super special treats? The book suggests using the best treats in the beginning but doesn't provide any guidance on how to taper that off into just normal treats. Recommend as an adequate beginner's guide to clicker training, but you really need to find websites to learn more in-depth.

After reading this book, my husband, daughter and I have successfully taught our cat how to hi-five, come when called and to sit. This has been helpful in getting her out of places we don't want her at and in keeping her for interested in playing. She regularly wants to "play" with her training and uses it daily. We use a hairbrush as a reward and if she hears a brush, she comes running now.For our shyer cat, this has been better at getting her attention and she will come, but for shorter distances. She's interested, but if our other cat comes, she cuts the sessions short. Good book with loads of great ideas.

I adore my cat, but his aggressive begging and attention-seeking behaviors were driving me nuts! So I decided to try clicker training and bought this book to learn how. I was able to begin training by page 10, and the rest of the book builds on the concepts even more. It even helps with some common problems with the process to help avoid pitfalls. I have been clicker training for 2 weeks and already I have seen dramatic improvements in my cat's behavior. I highly recommend this book to cat guardians who are motivated to make their cat relationship work, but who sometimes get frustrated with naughty behaviors.

We have trained several wonderful pet cats from kittenhood to adulthood with great success. However, after we elected to adopt a male stray who appeared at our door, this book (and great help from Cornell's vet school) kept our biting stray cat from being returned to "from whence he came".This book/method was recommended by Cornell's veterinary school to help us train our cat to stop biting us out of annoyance. An inexpensive target/clicker training device, food catty couldn't live without (sweet potato & chicken baby food, in our case) and consistent persistence with behavior training techniques solved the problem. He now licks instead of biting, meows instead of growling, and lets us hug and pet him at least a few times per day. (And he has the best purr this side of the Big Cats!) Worth the effort. Note: the emphasis in this book is on positive reinforcement, which worked beautifully. We found that a firm, non-angry, repeated persistent verbal "no" and some short "time out" confinements were great adjunct training.

Never thought you could train your cat? Well, you were wrong! Pick up this book, a clicker, and a can of tuna fish...and you'll be amazed at what you can do!
