This was a wonderfully written book that addressed all my fears when thinking about asset protection and making sure my inheritance goes to my children/grandchildren with proper (ongoing) planning. I have a basic Will now that will assure my heirs will have to go to probate court if they are lucky enough to inherit anything! Mr. Scott describes common issues where the intended heirs get nothing due to a parent’s remarriage, child’s divorce/death, or uncovered healthcare expenses such as nursing home care. He also explains how to protect your assets, avoid probate court, give control of assets with incapacitation/death, and ensure assets go to your designated heirs. He describes the different types of trusts: revocable, irrevocable, A/B trust, Dynasty protection trust, etc. This book includes Medicaid planning with exempt/non-exempt assets that effect qualification. I now have a basic understanding of asset protection, what to include in my estate planning, how to avoid probate court, and most important, what questions to ask my new estate planning lawyer. I was looking for a resource that would go beyond the typical Estate Planning advice and happily came upon this wonderful book. After meeting with several estate attorneys in the hopes of choosing someone to set up my plan, I realized that they were basically interchangeable and pretty much said the same things. Mr. Reed has the courage to wake people up to the idea that traditional estate planning simply doesn't offer enough protection or planning. He walks the reader step by step through some simple contingency plans that need to be put into place but that even many attorneys either don't know about, don't care about, or don't tell you. Whether you've started setting up your plan, are just thinking about it, or have one in place -- don't wait to read this book!
This book is outstanding! It is very logically laid out and clearly and simply written. The information presented truly educates you on what you need to know about Asset Protection. It also educates you about the shortcomings with about 99.99% of the information being given to unsuspecting souls by the prevailing attorneys and Estate Planning books out there.I urge anyone reading this review, GET THIS BOOK AND READ IT WITHOUT DELAY (if you are an attorney giving anyone Estate Planning advise then PLEASE, PLEASE read this book.).I ordered the paperback edition (which is scheduled to be delivered today) but was in a hurry so I also bought the Kindle edition yesterday and once I started reading I couldn't stop until I finished the book.
In a nutshell. Buy long term health insurance. Also a blatant business advertisement for his California firm. This book was a total rip-off. Don't waste your money on this book of nothing.
Recently I've been questioning my estate plan as it does not provide asset protection in case of long term health care costs, This book addresses this rapidly growing long term medical cost concern in great detail. it also addresses asset protection in the case of death and the remarriage of the surviving spouse, as well as asset protection for one's children and their progeny regardless of changing family circumstances. It clearly states scenarios that most people do not want to think about or even accept but nevertheless, happen very frequently. This is a very important book. It should be read by everyone regardless of age or financial circumstance.
A!though there are slants towards California, the information was presented in basic form. Anyone could draw questions from the material and seek out a competent estate administrator to see if it relates or needed in your situation. Should be required reading for anyone looking at powers of attorneys , wills, trust or estate planning.
