Most Christians today live, not in the West, but in the Majority World: Africa, Asia, and Latin and South America. In Global Church, Graham Hill talks about what Western Christians can learn from Christians in the Majority World and among First Nation peoples (i.e., Native Americans, aborigines).The book has its advantages. The author's heart is in the right place, in that he supports social justice and creation care as a part of Christian mission. He is sensitive to the plight of the needy and acknowledges the social and economic challenges that face the world today. He expounds good principles: listening to people's stories, being hospitable, etc. His discussion about how African Christians see the Bible as a source of life was profound, and his discussion of what he considered the strengths and weaknesses of liberation theology was judicious. Hill talks about what Christianity actually looks like among Majority World and First Nation peoples: some African versions, for instance, have a sort of prosperity Gospel, which is not surprising, considering that seeking material prosperity has long been an element of traditional religions. Hill's book does well to provide a framework for how Western Christians can learn from Majority World and First Nation Christians. Hill also refers to sources that an interested person may find helpful, as well as key Christian thinkers in the Majority World and among First Nation peoples; that makes the book a good introduction to this issue, and also a useful source for reference.The book was very repetitive, however. It could have used more anecdotes: the book talks about hearing the stories and biblical interpretations of the poor. Why not share examples of that with us? The book had some anecdotes, though. The book could have had a more substantive discussion on how Western Christians can respond to aspects of Majority World and First Nation Christianity that they consider unbiblical. Overall, the book refers to voices that are liberationist, even with regard to gay issues. While I have no problem with that, the book should have discussed how many Majority World Christians consider homosexuality a sin, which has posed a challenge to a number of mainline Christian denominations.This book makes important points, but it is not always very specific, and it could have been deeper.I received a complimentary review copy of this book from the publisher, in exchange for an honest review.

GLOBAL CHURCH: Reshaping our Conversations, Renewing our Mission, Revitalizing our Churches - Graham Hill, Downers Grove (Ill) (IVP Academic), 2015This book offers an ecclesiology (a theology of the Church) from a perspective that most of us in the Western world are unfamiliar with: a view from the majority world. Hill has ‘outlined some culturally formed approaches […] focused on Africa, Asia, indigenous cultures and First Nations. As Christians, we must examine how our culture has shaped our [discipleship] [or churches generally], and vice versa’ (410) - and it is only after such examination, Hill argues, that we are able to gain a balanced view of the Church.EcclesiologyReading this book, it’s impossible to keep down your enthusiasm - at least I have to admit that I soon quit trying. No critical remarks, then? Yes, to be sure, and exactly on the point where I ‘d felt the most optimistic hope before I started reading. Graham Hill’s earlier book, Salt, Light and a City (2012, Eugene OR) was subtitled ‘Introducing Missional Ecclesiology’, and in that book he summarizes the views of 12 theologians from the Euro-American landscape from four traditions: Roman Catholic (Ratzinger, Rahner, Küng), Eastern Orthodox (Hopko, Guroian, Zizioulas), Protestant (Russell, Moltmann, Webster), and Free Church (Yoder, Harvey, Volf). My own expectation was that Hill would now globally broaden his perspective into (for example) 24 paradigms, and I’d love to see how different models would look like. What he choose, however, was taking up the same three metaphors: salt (Reshaping Our Conversations: Ch2), light (Renewing Our Mission: Ch3-9), city (Revitalizing Our Churches: Ch10-16) - and work these into a variety of points on which we should be working. Which means that his new book is not a deeper dogmatic model (or a variety of models) for ecclesiology, but rather a todo-list for road construction. This may not necessarily be more satisfactory for the theological mind, but it is most certainly what we need while we are building churches.Sowing and harvestingAt the end of Ch10, which is about ‘indigenizing faith’, Hill uses a quote from Sri Lankan preacher and evangelist Daniel Thambyarah Niles, which also serves as a motto of the whole book and might well summarize the gist of what, in Hills view, we need to do as we get a glimpse of the global church (272f):‘The gospel is like a seed and you have to sow it. When you sow the seed of the gospel in Palestine, a plant that can be called Palestinian Christianity grows. When you sow it in Rome, a plant of Roman Christianity grows. You sow the gospel in Great Britain and you get British Christianity. The seed of the gospel is later brought to America and a plant grows of American Christianity. Now when missionaries came to our lands they brought not only the seed of the gospel, but their own plant of Christianity, flowerpot included! So, what we have to do is to break the flowerpot, take out the seed of the gospel, sow it in our own cultural soil, and let our own version of Christianity grow.’And then Hill asks the pertinent question: ‘Will you and your Christian community do the following? “Break the flowerpot, take out the seed of the gospel, sow it in your own cultural soil, and let your own version of Christianity grow.’[A broader review has been published on my website. www.medema.nl] [Follow me on Twitter @medema]

The only Disney artist and story teller who compared favorably with the legendary Carl Barks. Like Barks you can figure work done by Keno Rosa will be first rate, informative, and fun. Highly recommended.

Simply the best presentation of Don Rosa's work. Sad that he no longer produces stories. These volumes are an instant classic and if they go out of print are sure to rise in value.

I almost never write a review but we own and LOVE all 10 of these books. I like the financial conservative message but the adventures, artwork, storylines... All excellent and my kids have read these over the years (2014-2019) as they have came out (once hooked we preordered most). My kids are now 9 and 11 and they fought to read the last two. That is a sign of a great book series! These will be in my library for future generations.

The many winds of doctrine and confusion in the adventist church make this book a breakthrough for orthodox bible based adventism. Not onky is this book full of knowledge but also it is written with high rigour.The reader will find sound reasoning to these doctrines as well as very solid bible and ellen white foundations

This book espouses one side of a current discussion in the Seventh-day Adventist church. I recommend also getting materials from the other side if one wants to study this set of issues.

Answered many doctrinal questions based on the Bible.

The whole book is written from a viewpoint and belief system of one of the early authors in the book in a chapter defining what the concept of Sin is. The author of the chapter state very correctly that his chapter's teaching is laying the basis for everything else that is discussed in the book. His definition of sin is based on the Catholic Doctrine of Original Sin developed by Saint Augustine and adopted into the Catholic beliefs. This belief was later developed by John Calvin and Martin Luther to an extent. The belief itself is based on the philosophies of the Greek Philosophers Who taught Greek Dualism as an explanation for why there is evil and good in the world. And, why they are always in conflict with each other. Their philosophy extended to not just the world in general but to the struggle within the individual person and why people do both good and bad things. In this belief Good is " The spirit" and evil is "The Flesh". The belief goes on to state that "The spirit" is good and can not be corrupted by "the Flesh"and is immortal . Also, it states that Flesh is inherently corrupt and evil and can never be overcome or changed by "the spirit". It is also said to be mortal because of being evil. In this system you as a person have both in you inherently and the only way you can become good and free of evil is when you die and the spirit is set free. Or in the view of this book when you die or when Jesus comes. In either way you can not overcome the evil in this life and this is the teaching of this book. The Gospel of Jesus Christ teaches just the opposite. Jesus overcame and overcomes now and when he lives in you by faith that you choose to live by you too can overcome because of what he does and and did for you. The book tries to claim that this is Perfectionism or Legalism. Both of those belief systems though are based on your own efforts and strength and not what Jesus does. They claim to accomplish the same goal as The Gospel but are ineffective as many of the authors in the book have discovered by trying them. In Perfectionism and Legalism though there is no assurance of success or salvation like there is in The Gospel. With The Gospel a person is not lost because they seem to fail while trying to live a victorious life. They are forgiven and lifted up to try again. And, salvation is not determined by the occasional "good deed" or misdeed/ sin. It is determine by the pattern of the whole life. in the saved person sin is not a pattern of living. Is God successful in saving you like he said he would or have you given up on him and turned away. The authors seem to think they have The Gospel but only go with a limited gospel that is ineffective because of their deeply held belief in The Original Sin Doctrine. This belief and its ties to paganism and even Gnosticism seems to be stronger than their belief in Jesus Christ thereby rendering Jesus less powerful than the corruption of Original Sin until he comes to save the whole world. One can only wonder how Jesus is going to be able to save the wold world or universe from the corruption/ evil of Sin when he is said to be incapable of saving just one person from it. I only wish they could get the whole Gospel and not just part of it. It is sooooooo freeing and full of hope. As scripture says, "He who began a good work in you is faithful and will bring it to completion"! Don't fight him, cooperate!

This is not some Amazing Facts pamphlets packed together to be shared as extra-material after a Sabbath School class. This is a theological landmark, a long due book aimed to clear the cluttered minds of people in need for real food, not just diluted and distorted versions of some preachers' slogans.

Excellent book with sound theology. As a pastor, I recommend everyone read this book.

Yes, she goes intellectual with the extended references to John Locke. Yes, she goes deep history with several pages about Magna Carta (without telling you it was honored by English kings more in the breach than the observance up to the time of Charles I).Then I realized: Her target audience is readers of the New Yorker plus non-social science batchelor’s level Harvard grads or something like that. Socially liberal — the repeated las Casas references as an example — but not economically leftist or close.Wikipedia says: She has said, "History is the art of making an argument about the past by telling a story accountable to evidence".I’m still not sure what argument she was trying to make in the whole book. I eventually grew tired of trying to figure it out.I did learn tidbits and things, and learn enough about Lepore's writing, not to one-star it. Plus, I thought a two-star review would be less easily dismissed. That is, until Amazon being Amazon refused to accept the initial review because it had URLs in the body of the review.So, Amazon, one-starred it here because of THAT!

Lepore states, "The universe was created about fourteen billion years ago, according to the traces left behind by meteors and the afterlives of stars, glowing and distant, blinking and dim." The age of the universe has nothing to do with meteors and the afterlives of stars. Its age is inferred from: the expansion of the universe discovered by Lemaitre and later extrapolated back to the origin, consisting of a single quantum; the 3 K background glow, the residual of the big bang; and the relative abundance of the elements. I fear that Lepore, in attempting to encompass the entire United States history in a single book, may have devoted to it insufficient time to get the facts right.

Jill Lepore has gifted us with a superbly told history of the United States. Filled with exciting tales and a lyrically told history, it's an important read that's also an absolute joy to delve into. Don't let the page count deter you, from the first page, Lepore will grab your attention—hold tight, because she doesn't let go. This is how American history was meant to be shared and it's an important book for the age we find ourselves in, especially as we become frustrated with the present and begin to think it can't get any worse. Enjoy!

I think it is a shame that Americans in general seem to know so little about their own history, probably because they were bored to death in their history classes, with terrible textbooks. It is extremely important these days for us to know as much about this subject as possible, and Lepore's telling of it is gripping.I have gotten as far as the beginning of the Revolution so far, and I am impressed, not only with her vivid style, but also with her emphasis on the role of the slaves in this period of history. In her account, they are not just sufferers of oppression but active in their struggle for liberation, preceding for many years the desire of the white colonists (a third of them, anyway) for freedom. (In fact, as she points out, many opponents of the movement toward revolution were afraid that the British promise of emancipation if they won would in fact take place.)All in all, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to brush up on their history.

This is a book I wanted to like, but I come away from reading it with decidedly mixed feelings.I was looking for a refresher overview of American history and, while some might take exception to the events included or omitted, it is that. It is also full of interesting side notes about particular events. It is thoroughly footnoted.Its weakness lies in the author’s subjective glosses. Sometimes they are inspiring and soaring. At other times they are just dubious spins. And some points, some of which were obvious to begin with (such as the dissonance between the Declaration of Independence’s soaring declaration “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness” and the slavery of the time) are made over and over and over and over again and not always in a relevant context. Even though the point may be exceedingly valid, that can get tiresome.In short I found the book to be a very mixed bag and can’t really recommend it.

I lose a bit of confidence in a work of history when an event stated as fact is wrong even though it may be of minor interest in a history of the US. On page 32 is this: "James was born in 1566; the next year, when his mother died, he became king of Scotland". His mother, Mary Queen of Scots, did not die in 1567. Mary was executed by Elizabeth I in 1587.

Let me start by saying that Sarah Ruhl is widely recognized in the theater world, and was offered by Cincinnati Rep the opportunity to translate Chekhov - it was not her idea. This out of the way, it is also a fact that she doesn't speak Russian and had to get her sister-in-law to make a literal translation of the play so that she could rewrite that translation in a way that supposedly achieved her goal of "getting to the root of the original Russian", as she writes in the author's notes to the book. This is all very convoluted, preposterous, gimmicky, insulting to professional translators (I'm not one of them, in case you're wondering) and nothing more than a transparent ploy by Cincinnati Rep to drum up interest in a Russian play in Ohio when they staged the production back in October 2009. Elsewhere, one would hope that producing one of the world masterpieces of the theater repertoire would be enough to sell tickets, but perhaps Ohioan theater-minded audiences require a little more convincing. So be it.In itself, while this little ploy to get Americans to care about a Russian play is a bit grating (it reminds me of Americans' tendency to remake European movies to generate more income at the box office), it would be quite harmless if Ruhl's "translation" was actually good. But she simply put 21st-century colloquial English into the mouths of 19th-century Russians, giving the text an odd feel of continued anachronism and vague mediocrity throughout. In Russian (which I read), Chekhov renders the three sisters' anguish with stunning lyricism and musicality. Ruhl's translation is nothing more than lowbrow and plodding. If you care about a good translation of Three Sisters, I highly recommend the Penguin Classics edition (in Plays), translated by the late Peter Carson. Carson's work is of the highest caliber. Every line of his is like a gem that I admire both intellectually on the page and viscerally when I read the words aloud. Ruhl's translation, on the other hand, is best forgotten.

Both plays were imaginative re-telling of some brilliant classics. Sara R. definitely has her our voice as a playwright and these two shows play to her strengths. I enjoyed them very much.

Ruhl not only does a beautiful job with the translation and adaptation, but she also includes introductions that are masterful (and very personal, human) essays in dramaturgy and the craft of playwriting.

Our adaptation/rendering/cross translation of Three Sisters was better, just sayin. Not available for purchase anywhere. Nice work though, Sarah Ruhl! Love ya.
