This is a large book--and filled with lots of "news stories," photos, captions, etc. I was sort of expecting more of a historical non-fiction read for YA...but I think we'll get a lot of of these pages.

This is a very informative book that is useful when studying about the bubonic plague. This book deserve this rating for clearly explaining every part of the story based on the bubonic plague. The book was amazingly written.

Great book Fast shipping

4.5 stars rounded up to 5. Gail Jarrow hits you over the head within the first few pages with an image of physical expression of plague. It's morbidly mesmerizing because it is hard to believe that a tiny microscopic entity can wreck this much havoc on a human body within days. I honestly prepared myself for a gruesome account of how disease progresses anatomically and infects thousands, but instead I got surprisingly fast and engrossing narrative about history of plague and dramatic circumstances of fighting to rid of it. If you've been put off by that first picture - worry not, that's as graphic as the book gets. The rest of the photos dedicated to carry visual support of the fight against pestilence. Photographs of the aftermath of San Francisco earthquake are especially striking and powerful. (I did not know that on top of dealing with rebuilding people had to deal with plague epidemic at the time). As a matter of fact, the whole book is full of facts and events that I haven't heard about before - even though plague is something that most everyone is at least remotely aware of. "Bubonic Panic" leads you through the evolution of disease, all along showing you the spectacular sacrifices and first-class drama all the scientists/researchers (all involved, really) had to go through to prove any little find. The fact that so many people bluntly REFUSED to believe in existence of plague even presented with conclusive results of doctors is still mind-boggling! I've never thought that I can call a non-fiction book about plague thrilling, but there is no way around it - you'll be very involved! I've never read Gail Jarrow before (and now I intend to read the rest of her deadly diseases trilogy), but I can't praise this book high enough. The research is thorough, the photographs are plentiful and invoking; and the narrative is superbly paced. The only reason I rated it 4.5 stars instead of 5 is the fact that this book only briefly refers to "drugs made in 1940s" that helped increase survival rate and significantly helped in treatment of plague cases. Considering the fact that a good portion of the book was spent on the race between scientists to determine the cause of the disease and finding a vaccine (with a lot of names and descriptions), I was slightly disappointed not to dedicate a special chapter on who, how and when discovered what was to be the crucial point in plague treatment. It might have made book a little lengthier, but I felt like that was too important of a point not to highlight. Other than that personal nitpick of mine, I believe everyone should own a book that manages to explain such a deadly part of our history in such an accessible and entertaining manner. I usually have a hard time with dry academic texts, so "Bubonic Panic" is what constitutes a perfect little book for me that delivers detailed research and photographic history with such an engaging narrative. It goes straight to my personal library.Watch out for rat fleas and Happy Reading!

This was a page-turner. Less about the science of the plague bacteria and more about the history of communities that were impacted by the plague and how organizations/institutions of government/individuals worked tirelessly exploring, discovering, combating, eradicating the plague. Each contributor played a critical role in moving the world forward in saving its citizens from the plague. Jarrow’s writing synthesizes the stories of these people, seamlessly, into a cohesive narrative of what happened and is still happening because the plague still plagues us! As I read this, I envisioned middle school classrooms – language arts or social studies or an ambitious science teacher—providing space for student-led discussions around larger themes of perseverance, collaboration, global citizenship, displacement, compassion, racism, humanitarianism. Looking forward to reading Jarrow’s Red Madness and Fatal Fever. This might make for an interesting text set in a language arts classroom that is partnering with a science or content area classroom. Questions related to the science of the plague could also be used to launch research...

Besides the fact that you can’t eat while you read this I don’t have any criticisms of this book. I think it’s an excellent addition to any history curriculum. If you are reading through history on a four-year cycle, you could add it late in year 2 or anytime in year three.The history of the plague is interesting in that all the historical documentation matches what scientists today see when they observe patients in our modern times. I guess even ancient people knew that there was no “spinning” this into something it wasn’t. Without spoilers I can tell you that the plague is just as scary as you think it is.Equal amounts science and history in a readable narrative format it makes a subject which could be a boring list of facts become engaging in a gross and creepy way. Future scientists will be engaged and every reader will be informed.Side note- If you’ve read Kristin Lavransdatter this book really explains the science behind the plot.I borrowed this book from the Chicago public library in order to judge it for the 2016 Cybils Awards.

This book was my first introduction to the fields of logistics and supply chain management as the textbook for my graduate-level international logistics class. What I like most about this book is that Martin Christopher is concise. Christopher created a book that, while compact, conducts a wide-reaching overview of the subject. There is room for Christopher to delve deeper into certain topics, but his avoidance is what makes the book highly accessible. I highly recommend this as an introduction to the subject for business students, MBA students, or anyone who wants to get familiar with logistics and supply chain management.

"Logistic And Supply Chain Management" is one the best books written in this field. It explores most of the issues related with the supply chain in a comprehensive and yet clear manner. It's updated with the latest concepts and approaches in the industry. This book is a must for your own personal library.

After reading various textbooks on logistics, quantitative analysis and strategy, this book was very refreshing, in large part from the fact that it is a short and non-technical book. The title of my review says it all, this book is summary for busy people wanting to get som insights into what is going on in logistics and organizational theory . I got through the book in two readings, which is a very valuable aspect for busy people.Still, despite being brief, it touches on most important aspects, and points you to further areas of importance if what you read here makes you want to change things in your organization.So: Not technical, easy read, 4 stars instead of 5 because it is too brief to be truly useful for those that actually want to learn the subject-matter.

If you like me need to get to SCM strategic or tactical decisions, I would rather consult other books I also own. "Strategic Logistics Management" from a school book perspective and the brand new "Designing and Managing the Supply Chain" are excellent and better resources, covering everything (and then some) this book can offer. I will probably resell my copy of this book.For SAP "Jockeys" or those who are thinking about SAP, "Supply Chain Management based on SAP Systems" is Excellent.

This is a good quality text book - we ordered it for school and didn't have any complaints.

It gives a very good overview of SCM. It makes Supply Chain Management look far more simpler than it really is or has become in the last few decades. However, the depth is missing!

There have been quite a few attempts in this relatively young art for people to survey the landscape that is film and television scoring, and make sense of it in writing; most of them are hugely out of date, stopping even before the advent of the DAW, or incredibly wordy (having little in the way of musical examples), and some still come from an incredibly biased perspective about what is "good" scoring or not.Then there are some books that are just incredibly superficial, either by focussing solely on the technology (which changes so fast as to be almost instantly irrelevant) or really aimed at a very basic, beginner level where someone might not even have the basics of music theory down. Either way, there has not yet been a book with an enormous amount of meat on the bone both in terms of the reality of how film scores get put together, or in terms of truly understanding the musical language of film and expressing it clearly.Scoring the Screen changes that - a meticulously researched survey of film scoring as it is today, including the roots and the development through the early years, but focussing on real world examples and a practical approach, tying ideas in music theory to actual emotional responses and the effect of the music on the audience. It is a book that realizes that ultimately film music is designed for an audience, and its power is in its effect on them. The musical score reductions get right to the point, without being dumbed-down (as has certainly been true of some books prior), and there are an incredible number of them, from highly relevant work from Elliot Goldenthal, through John Powell, Don Davis, Hans Z, Danny Elfman, showing you exactly what is going on and why it works.This is the first truly indispensable book for anybody wanting to really read about film scoring as it is today; it is written with a palpable sense of joy and love for the industry and the art, by someone who has been on point in the very, very front line of the industry, managing and overseeing numerous scores from movies you have seen recently, and loved. If you are studying film scoring, you absolutely need it, and I'd be stunned if it's not already on the required reading list of any media music course worldwide. As a film composing student, this book is a TREASURE with loads of film music gems. From a music analysis standpoint it is spot on. Mr. Hill is not only knowledgeable about his music and composition skills, but his analysis of the stuff written between the lines on the screen and the lines on the music paper is the REAL treasure. It's the missing element, the secret language that they don't teach in ANY of the finest film music institutions. BRAVO !!! Thank you for taking the time Mr. Hill.And just as a side note the the reviewer that gave this book a poor rating because it didn't have a CD with it: you are obviously NOT a film composer or a serious film music enthusiast. NONE of the film scoring study books EVER come with a CD, for good reason. So, get off your lazy butt for 2 seconds, go to Youtube and listen - they're ALL there. I KNOW because I've listened to all of them.

I am so stunned by how knowledgeable and experienced, but also incredibly generous the author Andy Hill is. He was a pro in Hollywood for many years, but also he is very talented in education. He has more than enough patience and theories to break down this fairly young, but extremely complicated art form.Recently, I purchased his video instruction course from Cinematic Score website run by a film composer and Berklee instructor, Marc Jovani. I could hear and see some of the examples with his explanation. Because of copyright issue of film scores, I’ve never seen this before from other film scoring books!There are very few, a handful amount of film scoring books like by Fred Karlin & Rayburn Wright, or by the film composer of Mission Impossible and jazz pianist, Lalo Schifrin, but this is truly a one and only gem textbook with actual media examples both classics and recent film scores created by highly renowned Hollywood film composers.Thank you so much for your compassion and intelligence serving greatly for aspiring film composers today, Professor Andy Hill! :)

As a college film music educator, visual media music supervisor, and hit songwriter/producer, I’ve had occasion to study several good film music texts that focus primarily on the technical/mechanical/philosphical aspects of scoring. However, with his tireless, detailed study of how composers actually use music to support the emotional narrative, which, after all is what visual media scoring is really about, Andy Hill has created the only modern film scoring text that matters.Thanks Andy.

Such great insight into the function of the music and details of the music itself. No online audio/midi files available due to licensing reasons but let's be glad this book was made at all. So many instructive works get squashed early on due to copyright restrictions. So glad this was able to see the light of day. The chapter on Vertigo is more than worth the price of the book on its own.

There are a decent amount of film scoring books on the market, and many that get in to analysis, as well. What excites me the most about this one is that it's not just a harmonic analysis, but an orchestration, emotional and basically, film music analysis of some of the best scores (most of which can't be found in full orchestra versions).The introduction touches on the first minute or so of "Malcolm is Dead" from The Sixth Sense, by James Newton Howard, and with full orchestral excerpts, Andy goes through everything from the bitonality, slippery intervallic motions of harmonies, melodic lines, and how this music works with the emotions, thoughts and storyline. It's an inspirational introduction to a very in depth book that I'm looking forward to delving in to.Take notes.

We've lived in our house for 14 years now, and pretty much used the available yard space in our suburban lot backyard up! Where to put new plants, the veg garden, the squash and melons that send out runners and eat the yard? We tried raspberries and ended up tearing them out, blackberries too. If only I had started with Vertical Vegetable and fruit before trying to grow those plants.This book offers great information on various techniques to grow up instead of out. Ideas for trellises, teepees, fencing, and how to build them makes this book worthwhile on its own, but then the author gives varieties of plants to grow, where to grow them, zone info, how to train them, etc. We are going to try raspberries again, blackberries, grapes (did you know for best grape production don't improve the ground too much with compost or the rich soil will encourage the grapes to grow more leaves and vine instead of fruit? Me either!), melons, and squash, I can't wait! This book makes me and Jim want to go plant something, now!

This book has a fairly narrow reach, just as implied by its title. Within that limited venue, it does a nice job of treating its subject. Yes, you can find similar information in other books today, but if you have not acquired them in your library, this book should be a worthwhile addition to your personal collection.In my reading, I almost without exception find something new and worthwhile ... this book is not an exception. Its content is authentic and I found no serious errors ... so, of the subject implied by its title fits your need, I think you will find it a worthwhile addition to your personal library. On the other hand, if you have 30 years of gardening experience, well, let the book's description be your guide!

This book was exactly what I expected. Great ideas and diagrams for growing vertical. Not so much exact plans, but this book makes you rethink how you can grow food. I'm trying a few techniques in my garden and so far the results are great.

I received an electronic ARC of this graphic memoir in exchange for an honest review. This is a touching autobiography of a woman trying to make sense of who she is by exploring her family's past. The tone is honest and the pain she felt in being so unsure of her place in the world came through. So does the wonder and confusion of her visit to Algeria. The artwork works well with the story. I thought that the technique of making the pictures she takes be in color while the rest of the novel was in black and white. Worth reading.

This graphic novel was a lovely, well written, and beautifully drawn memoir of a girl's adventure to visit her family's homelands. Using a guide, old photos, and her grandmother's memoir, she leaves France to explore Algeria where she learns (and teaches the reader) a lot about Algerian political history as well as her family's history and influence on the country.

A trip of return and rediscovery of roots that teaches quite a bit about a bit of North African and French history that continues to be oddly obscure and misunderstood to this very day.

I really enjoyed reading this comic book. I find it to be unbiased, honest, sad and funny at at times. I am definitely buying the French version.

This book is a distorted view of how the « pieds noirs « lived in Algeria. It portrayed that the « Arabs » the original inhabitants of the land as barbarous and the occupiers as civilized and victimes. Sheer distortion of what really happened. Propaganda, I give it a Zero.

Maybe the issue is I gave up half way through, but given that the primary character is from France and was raised there, by parents who lived there...but I'm still trying to figure out how America ties in at all.The one positive I have was that the illustrations were great. Apparently a comic book style memoir is not something I enjoy...at all.
