My 7 year old loves this book and will refer to it frequently when deciding on what stone to wear on a given day (at this point, she has a few!) Very simple, straightforward, and a great first/intro book to semi-precious gemstones for kids or adults.

Terrific book... I have referenced it (and Gladwell's other books) many times in speeches, conversations and in my own books.

This is not just a good book. This is an important book. One of the first things I realized in reading this book by Malcolm Gladwell is that his position is diametrically opposite from that of Dr. Ben Carson, who through his campaign for the presidency stated that "poverty is a state of mind." Carson emphasized that despite all odds he was able to pull himself out of poverty and become a neurosurgeon and accomplish the things he did.Gladwell's book states early that success doesn't happen in a vacuum. It isn't based on intelligence, but on a variety of factors, and he uses multiple examples to demonstrate that we as a nation could have many more successful people in our country if we were to accept that it takes a village to make successes out of our children. In fact, he shows that hard work and opportunity in almost all cases are more important than intelligence.One story tells of the Canadian hockey league and the fascinating statistic that the vast majority of all successful hockey players are born in January, February or March. Why? Because the cutoff date for signing children is January 1, and those born in the first three months have a distinct advantage in age, experience and size in relation to those they play against. That same cutoff date is used by other countries, such as the Czech Republic, for not only hockey but soccer as well, which means that children born in the later part of the year consistently are overlooked when it comes to team sports. It's a built-in bias.These biases are all around us, and determine who succeeds or fails, constantly. In addition, the bias of a culture has a significant effect on how well a student does. Gladwell talks about the belief that Asians are better at math, which he shows is because their languages are more number-friendly, leading children to count earlier, and which make math simpler. In addition, he shows the inherent tradition of hard work of southern China had resulted in a work ethic for their descendants that continues today.Many of the stories are supported with statistics. One of the most eye-opening to me was his observation of the impact on summer vacation. Statistics show that the amount that lower-, middle-, and upper-class students learn in elementary school each year isn't that significantly different. But when you compare what they learn or forget over summer vacation, there is a significant discrepancy. Upper-class parents keep their children busy with lessons and classes all summer, while in most situations lower and even middle-class students don't do much during the summer and often forget much of what they have learned the previous year. As the summers add up, the problem compounds. And so the difference between upper, middle and lower class widens.The book is significant, easy to read, and extremely thought provoking. I highly recommend it.

While this book was enjoyable for this trivia alone, Gladwell manages to change our perception of success entirely, because timing, circumstance, and even luck are major factors that decide a person’s success. Sometimes the disadvantaged actually have all the advantages in the world just because they happened to be born in the right place at the right time. We have to examine all the factors surrounding a successful individual which all had to come together in order for him or her to be an outlier.Gladwell bases most of his anecdotes and explanations on research conducted by others and I wish he would have gone into more detail about how these studies were conducted and how reliable they actually are but this is the only complaint I have about this book. He is a very charming and enthusiastic story teller, he thoroughly explains his thought process without rambling and kept me interested and engaged throughout the whole book. Overall I enjoyed reading Outliers and I would definitely recommend it to others.

So far, I have made the vanilla ice cream and it is really good. I knocked off one star because none of the recipes have any nutritional info (macros) listed. Why? It's a keto book, we need to know the macros and it would have been so much easier for the author to figure it out. My other issue is that I would've loved to have at least a handful of recipes that have eggs. The author says that custard is hard to make which is why she didn't put it in. Is that supposed to make me want to buy the next book with ice cream made from a custard base? All this said, I am eating the vanilla ice cream right now and it's very satisfying. I will continue to go through the book and make more of these recipes which look wonderful. As she mentions, weighing and measuring the quantities is key. Same as with baking, it is an exact science. Edit: I took one star away because I'm finding some problems with a couple of the recipes e.g., the strawberry ice cream quantities are so small that it wouldn't even churn and yielded about two scoops. Not good. Whatever happened to proofreading and having recipes tested by multiple people?But, I will add that the maple ice cream is sublime. I did not make the bacon "crack" because I didn't have glycerin, but that ice cream stood very well on its own.

I was on the fence about going keto, I knew all the reason why, but love my nightly bowl of ice cream, Its a habit I've had for years. I've tried "healthy" ice creams, but they are terrible. I have a pallet, I like quality foods with flavor and texture, and the low fat or high protein or whatever brands are terrible.I'd heard good things about Carrie's recipes, so I decided to give it a try. The first batch I made, chocolate, was amazing! Ben and Jerry's good! Creamy full of flavor and delicious! If I could have my ice cream and be keto, I could do it! And I did. Its been six months and I haven't looked back. Keto all the way, with 2 to 4 batches of homemade ice creams a month.If it wasn't for Carrie's recipes, I would still be eating carbs and feeling terrible. Now I can have my ice cream and eat it too! Thanks Carrie!

I'm loving working my way through this book. The hardest part was just reading the first steps on how it all works. Once I made the first batch, I now can easily and quickly make new ones anytime. I love being able to make ice cream myself, which keeps me from eating too much. I also love not feeling guilty about eating ice cream at all.So far, I've made 4 kinds and all have been great! My favorite has been the Pumpkin Spice Latte ice cream. The coconut one needed a little bit something extra, like a few chocolate chips on top. Next time, I'll make the coconut with chocolate nibs mixed in.Tip: I bought a barely used ice cream maker from someone off of FB marketplace for $5. Garage sales work too. People seem to get them as wedding gifts and never use them.

I've used Carrie's older ice cream cookbook too and they are both fantastic! Now that we've gone keto, it only madesense to get this one. It's not disappointed us at all! I've tried the cinnamon, pumpkin spice latte, triple chocolate, andthe peanut butter and all are fantastic. Yes, some do take a little more time, but well worth the treat factor! How fun tomake sugar free marshmallows!!!!Certainly, if you don't care for xylitol or can't use xylitol, this is not the book for you. Some recipes do have items thatyou'd probably have to order online, but for those of us that love to try new things and experiment in the kitchen, thisis the book for you. I'm confused how one reviewer, cut the book down, but loved the resulting ice cream. This ISreally good ice cream and keeps us on the right track! Win, win!

Bought this for my son... Has some great recipes. I have adjusted his favorite ones to replace xylitol with allulose, since he has a dog and xylitol is dangerous to pets and he doesn’t want it in his home .Carrie Brown is the Ice Cream Queen, and truly recommend this book for inspiration and guidance if you are not used to making alternative sugar ice cream that is soft, most alternative sweeteners when used if the ice cream isn’t eaten right away will be a solid rock hard mass.

I give this five stars! Carrie Brown has obviously poured a lot of passion, knowledge and dedication into making the best tasting and textured Keto ice creams! Real ice creams. And I am an ice cream snob who can make an excellent egg custard base.If some of the ingredients aren’t readily available at your local market, they are readily available right here on Amazon, where you ordered your cookbook from. Carrie uses Xylitol as a sweetener because of the unique flavor and textural characheteristics that it provides - in order for you to have delicious ice cream. Other sweeteners don’t work because they don’t give you nice ice cream. Ms Brown devotes an entire chapter explaining her ingredient choices and how you can best source them.The recipes that follow are excellent and all sound delicious. They are easy to understand, clear and concise. I was able to produce an excellent ice cream on the first try with no confusion or kitchen mistakes.The final chapter is devoted to what I call “mix ins” which are used throughout the recipes such as chocolate chunks, fudge ripple, Keto marshmallows (some serious food wizardry went in to inventing that recipe! Or maybe Carrie is simply a Keto kitchen genius).For my first try, I made the recipe for Kept in the Dark Chocolate Ice Cream, and added the Peanut Butter Drops from the mix-in chapter. These peanut butter drops taste like Reese’s, peanutty, slightly salty and gritty. Even if you aren’t Keto, you might need that little recipe.Regarding the nutritional information, if you really need an estimate, there are plenty of free online services that will calculate an estimate for you, you just need to punch in the details and carefully measure your serving. Absolutely worth the effort for this fine collection of delicious ice cream recipes.

I’ve never made it a secret how much a love a good hockey story. So when I discovered a new YA Contemporary series that centered around a hockey town I knew I had to check it out. And I am so glad that I did, because this book is so good!Off the Ice takes place in Juniper Falls, a small town in Minnesota that lives and breathes pretty much nothing but hockey. The high school hockey team is basically royalty, and a lot of the boys act like. But then there are others, like Tate Tanley. Tate is different. He’s sweet and caring and not out to hook up with as many girls as he can possibly get. And when he sees Claire O’Connor he can’t help but be just a little taken by his sisters best friend.I really loved Tate’s character. He’s a good kid, but troubled and hiding some dark secrets. For the longest time he had no one to talk to about any of the things that were happening in his life, until he developed a relationship with Claire. In Claire he finds someone he can trust and with whom he can discuss the demons that keep him from completely enjoying his life and hockey. Plus, he’s just a really stand up guy!And Claire! Claire has seen her entire life turned upside down over the past year. Her fathers diagnosis of a brain tumor has caused her to take a semester off of school, and she begins to question everything in her life. She’s burdened with an incredible amount of guilt because she feels she was off having a good time at college while her father was suffering. Tate helps her to find herself and deal with all of her issues and it’s incredible how strong their relationship is.This story was just so good! Julie Cross has created a wonderful world in this small little hockey town, and I loved getting to know both Tate and Claire, plus all their friends. Off the Ice had everything I loved in a great YA Contemporary. Love, drama, fun characters, and a quirky little town. It was perfect! If you love ya books that center around sports teams this book is definitely for you!

I’ve been looking forward to this book for a long time! Ever since I first learned of Julie writing it and reading a very early first couple chapters…I just knew it was going to be something special. Having read it now, I was right. Off the Ice, the first book in Julie Cross’ Juniper Falls series, is a spectacular book with a gripping story line and captivating characters. This book could easily be described as having a Friday Night Lights feel, so if you’re a fan of the show, I think it would be safe to say that you would enjoy this book.The start of the book starts off with a bit of drama, but is the foundation for the rest of the story. In a town where high school hockey is the sole focus and the main event each week, Tate Tanley finds himself in the shadow of his dad, whom the town loves and adores. Little do they know who he really is – the side that Tate sees. However, there is one other person who knows just how Tate’s dad treats him and that’s Claire O’Connor, the girl whom Tate has had a crush on for a long time. Certain circumstances bring them together unexpectedly, but just for one night. Fast forward a year, and things have changed for both of them, but not for the better – or is it? I guess it all depends on how you look at it.In a book filled with hardships, discovering who you are outside of the spotlight and perhaps even finding your spotlight once again, Tate and Claire are two characters who find shelter in each other. But it isn’t without its trials and tribulations.It may be safe for me to say that aside from the unique storyline, the characters are my favorite part of Off the Ice. I find them individually inspiring and developed in a way that makes them work perfectly together on the page. The hardships that they each go through, don’t overshadow one another, which I thought was important. Everything about the story seemed well thought out and strategically pieced together. Of course, the aspect of it having a sports background didn’t hurt! I love a good book that has sports as a focus and hockey isn’t one that I feel is overdone. In fact, I haven’t really seen any other YA/NA books that have hockey in it. But maybe that’s just me!If you’re looking for an author to get hooked on, then check out Julie Cross. She has yet to write a book that I haven’t been able to put down and at this point…having read many (if not all) of her books, I doubt she ever will. 🙂 She’s earned a spot at the top of my favorite author list and even has her own shelf on my bookcase. (Yay, Julie!)

In this book I learned pretty well of what's new, how to play with it's features, to maximize the use of Windows 10 and more. I was still using the Windows 98 format on my Windows 7. I’ve been using windows 10 since February 2016 and I don’t have any idea of other features of windows 10 that’s why I downloaded this book and after reading it, finally I’ve learned some keyboard shortcuts and also I’ve learned about some of the things cortana can do and how to change the settings of cortana. Thanks to author, thumbs up to you.

This was purchased as a gift for a friend that is new to Windows 10 and Edge. This person prefers to refer to paper manuals and instructions and I gave this as a gift to supplement her new computer. I flipped through it to be sure it was appropriate. I am familiar with most of the content and it would not be a good fit for long time, computer literate users, however, it's great reading for someone that has limited knowledge. I recommend the book.

Although it claims to be a "comprehensive guide" for anyone, this book may appeal only to the most inexperienced user. The information presented is so limited that book length (105 pages including those that are blank (6 pages)) is inflated by employing large type fonts, excessively wide line spacing, and a "Free Bonus" which constitutes over 10% of the book and has nothing to do with Windows 10. Buyer beware.

This book is a very comprehensive guide about Windows 10. It outlines the differences and similarities between it and Windows 8. The installation procedures for Windows 10 are also included, step by step. I really like the pictures that are used to make it easier to understand exactly what is happening at each stage, to ensure that you are doing the right thing. The new features are explained and many more tweaks are highlighted.This is a great Windows 10 reference book. Get it, read it, and do exactly what it says. Make sure you put it up for safe keeping when you need to figure something out in the future!

This book makes Windows 10 so much easier to use. I still have trouble with it sometimes and I knew I could use a guide like this. I love that it has screenshots, everything is so clear and easy to understand. I saw guides that try to explain everything just with text and it just isn't the same. The author did a good job in presenting all the necessary information about the operating system without going in too much technical detail. It is written with plain language for the everyday user. I found it very useful and I really can recommend it.

I often wondered why the conservative right wing attacks the Affordable Healthcare Act (Obamacare) with such ferocity. After all, it protects those with vested interests and expensive lobbyists - keeps the insurance companies in the mix by steering away from the "single payer" idea that much of the world uses so efficiently, bars the government from bargaining with the pharmaceutical companies (so we end up with drug price 50% higher than the rest of world - so much for "free markets" so admired by these folks). The hated requirement the individual mandate that requires the purchase of the insurance or payment of a fine was invented by the conservative think tank The Heritage Group and was a solid component of "Romneycare" in Massachusetts, the predecessor of this program. Well, let Steven Brill lead you down the path of how the program came about and was enacted. Interesting story for us "policy wonks" and great to get the details from someone without a political axe to grind. Well done!

For any one who is seriously interested in healthcare, it is critical reading, if sometimes heavy going reading. Brill focusses on the history of Obamacare, and in doing so makes it clear that the root of the U.S. health care problem is political. Healthcare now accounts for one sixth of the US economy, and that means that the money and influence t that can be rallied against any change are formidable. This made the enactment of Obamacare so torturous a process, and explains why the result is a U.S. system that still has profound problems.Another reviewer refers to Bismark's dictum that one should not watch either laws or sausages being made, and the first half of Brill's book demonstrates that -- exhaustively and and times exhaustingly. He shows how it was that, even with a Democratic majority in both houses, lobbyists for special interests (the drug companies, the insurers, the hospitals, the device makers, the patient's groups, and on and on and on) were able to force those in favor of reform to water down proposals, compromise, buy off, and on and on an on. In so doing, I learned a lot about the economics and the power structure of the U.S. health care system, but I also learned more than I probably wanted to know about a few too many individuals. I also learned (or was confirmed in my belief) that within the Obama administration there were major divisions of opinion and major shortages of communication.The second part of the book, on what happened after the legislation was passed, was more interesting -- or perhaps more accurately less exhausting. First, in this part, Brill intersperses the political narrative with stories of individuals who ran into financial catastrophe through illness, and looks at what varioius institutions (mostly hospitals) did to bring these individuals close to financial ruin. Second, his narrative of the failed launch of the Obamacare website is eyeopening -- the launch failed because the project was badly run from its inception, and that reflected bad management by the administration, all the way up to the top. That, however, is followed by the livliest part of the book, in which a "Geek Squad" of mostly private sector techies saves the day. There is a lot in this section to gratify anti-Obama types and anti-govenment types, but only if you read it in isolation from the context. That context is one of "non profit" hospitals with CEO's who earn millions a year, drug companies whose devotion to research is far exceeded by their devotion to their profit margins, and an overall situation in which the consumer of healthcare comes in last.At the end of the book, Brill argues that there is no way that the U.S. healthcare system can be rebuilt from the ground up in a way that would minimize costs and maximize outcomes. That would mean single payer, it would mean Medicare drug price negotiation if not drug price regulation, it would mean serious research on comparative outcomes and costs, and it would mean a whole lot of other violent change to one-sixth of the U.S. economy. That sixth has a very powerful interest in resisting change, while the five-sixths of the economy that would benefit has a more diffuse interest. Granted that, he proposes that perhaps we should consider making the institutions that directly provide more and more U.S, medical care --the hospitals -- into insurers as well as providers. It's an interesting idea that sounds a little like handing the whole henhouse over to the fox, but it bears discussion. As to Obamacare, Brill concludes that it was a major accomplishment, in that it brought healthcare into the reach of many more Americans. Still, Brill argues that it was essentially tinkering with the jalopy, not putting in a new engine.This book is the best overall summary of the U.S. healthcare situation that I have read in years, which is why five stars. It could have been a better book, better organized and more readable. Still, I think it is one of those books you should read even if it takes effort.

Mr. Brill does an incredible job in two areas. First he is able to explain some very complicated concepts in very simple layman terms. Secondly he tells the story of Obamacare with a pace and intrigue you would expect from a great mystery writer. Even though we all know how it turned out eventually Mr. Brill is able to make the story very suspenseful. In terms of politics he seems to play the ball straight down the middle to use a golf analogy. For that reason I think even if you feel strongly one,way of the other about Obamacare you will come away with new insights that may just soften your position slightly.

Brill has always been a writer who asks the hard questions. The basic question he asks in "Bitter Pill" is: how does extending private health insurance to millions of Americans solve the most basic problems of our broken health care system: price gouging where a hospital can charge $50 for a box of Kleenix, $30 for one band-aide, or $20 for one aspirin? Many other useful helps for second language students such as lists of irregular verbs, prepositions, phrasal verbs, commonly misspelled words, etc.

Although I've given this dictionary four stars, I'm really disappointed with this book.The contents are great, this dictionary will help to improve your English, no question about it. Even though there are some flaws like horrible thin yellow paper (it's pretty transparent), a clumsy cover and pale printing I could almost love this book.The tiny printing type this is what nearly ruined this dictionary for me. It could have been way better for what it cost me (41 dollars!) if printed with just a little bigger font. If I'd known about its quality I wouldn't have bought it. Not impressed.----------Update. 05.05.2016The book turned out to be pretty sturdy for how flimsy its pages look. The paper pages are made of is reeeealy thin but surprisingly durable. Now you can get it for half price (whereas I got it for $41 2 y.a.) which makes it a no-brainer.

This is the best dictionary i ever have because it's so easy to understand and straightforward. It's kinda thick and heavy as well so i recommend to use it at home

Great packaging and quality is really good

I'm very happy with this dictionary though it's only showed with American pronounciation. It comes with a CD-ROM from which you can hear the pronounciation of vocabulary. It's showed the vocabulary which is belonged to Academic words or Oxford 3000tm, for this reason, I found it's very helpful to know which words you must know. Otherwise, just for reference.

I bought a brand new dictionary, but its quality is just acceptable. Sometimes I bought the used stuff one but It is newer than this dictionary ☺️

I have three other dictionaries, but this is the best; especially, when the CD-Rom is used. In my opinion five stars are not enough to evaluate how good it is.
