JO BOALER is a professor of mathematics education at Stanford University and co-founder and faculty director of youcubed. She serves as an advisor to several Silicon Valley companies and is a White House presenter on girls and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). The author of seven books, including Mathematical Mindsets, and numerous research articles, she is a regular contributor to news and radio in the United States and England. JEN MUNSON is a postdoctoral fellow at Northwestern University, a professional developer, and a former classroom teacher. She received her PhD in mathematics education from Stanford University. Her research focuses on responsive, equitable mathematics instruction. CATHY WILLIAMS is the co-founder and the executive director of youcubed at Stanford University. Before working at youcubed, she was a high school math teacher and worked in mathematics curriculum and administration at the county and district levels in California.

I purchased this book to provide my son some out of school practice to help bolster his understanding in math using (what I thought) were new concepts for visualizing ways to solve mathematical problems. I couldn't be more wrong. This is propaganda for a common core approach to visualization of math situations with little explanation for how students get to the right answer. The information is centered on discussing how students MIGHT solve an equation ... without actually solving it. No thanks. Maybe someone can understand this crap, but not me. I'll be returning for a refund ASAP.
I couldn’t love Jo Boaler/you cube more! The visual math approach and creative side of math have helped my kids to live math. This book helps bring more fun with math to our family. My kids often tell me: I don’t like the boring math they teach in school - let’s do the fun math that I really can understand and we find in life around us. This approach really helps them understand the why behind how math works.
This book has some very clever activities. We are testing some of the ideas for Algebra now. Ms. Boaler says that almost all students will respond to the activities and that is what we are hoping.

Perfect addition to a thinking classroom.
I have a set of these and use them often in the classroom.Understand, this is not a skill and drill math book, or propaganda for common core.This is a math book that helps students understand numbers and to think and reason with them flexibly.To draw a crude analogy: Math worksheets and working toward getting the correct answer: cook, think flexibly with numbers, concept and reasoning: chef.This will helps children become the "chef" of math, not the "cook".As a sidenote, I would not use this book with one child to tutor, or my own child. Rather, this meant to be used in groups of students and children, as the discussions and reasonings are a HUGE component.
So many excellent activities to supplement any curriculum.
